George, Roger - Any idea how the Gould Tunnel came by its name? I've been doing a bit of research regarding Jay Gould's investment in small lines in western New York and Ohio early in his career. I'm wondering if the Steubenville & Indiana RR was a piece of his portfolio at any time.

What are you thoughts on that for the 1st 2? What kind of ceilings are each? What's in there now? Accessible?

Electrical work for simple overhead lighting is generally pretty easy to do,

The first load of lumber will be dedicated to construction of the staging area and the backdrop.

Hmmmm....... I'd get the workshop squared away 1st along with whatever larger power tools you have to install. Tables/work benches and storage space so you can work on the construction of the layout components as needed vs. being in your own way.

Ceilings in both rooms are drywall with texture. In the workshop, the current lighting consists of 4 bulbs in sets of two. The sets are towards each corner and are separated in the middle by 3' wide enclosed beam box. My intention there is to install LED shop lights. I've already picked out the model I want (same color spectrum as the train room). The tricky part for me is placement of fixtures. The office part of the room will be fine. I want to make sure I have good light for the workshop part.

In the train room, we have bulbs enclosed in more decorative hemispherical fixtures. Nonetheless, they are simple bulbs. My intention is to put track lighting in there. Again I've picked out the components, but am a bit unsure on actual placement and quantity of fixtures. Currently (west to east on the layout) there are 2 fixtures, an enclosed beam box (extension of the one in the workshop), 4 fixtures, a wide box enclosing beam and ductwork, 2 fixtures, another beam box, and the final 2 fixtures (where the staging area will eventually be).

I actually mis-spoke. The first load of lumber will contain pegboard and furring strips for the workshop. Assembly of tables and work benches is underway. I am also putting things onto their proper shelves. The second load of lumber will be for the staging area.

It is absolutely my intention to get the workshop squared away before proceeding with any layout construction. That includes moving the drill press down to the workshop and getting the table saw (in the garage) hooked up to the 220V outlet (still needs the correct plug).

Good catch, Rufus.

I was lucky when we moved years ago - unfinished space and open truss system. I left it open in my shop and am slowly switching over to integral LED shop lights there. Get them at Costco and you can daisy chain them together.....

Rooting around in drywall ceilings is annoying......

Good lad! Get that work space in order! 220v? What kind of table saw do you have? BTW, my entire shop is on a switched 20 amp line so when I turn off the lights, the entire room is off.

Yes, it is but that's what the builder insisted upon. I have to look at the Costco lights (seen them before) more closely. I need the workshop light color spectrum to match that of the LED lighting in the train room or paint jobs that look good in one room might not in the other. I have the matching ones picked out at the electric supply house (matches the track lighting).

I have my grandfather's (the shipbuilder and cabinet maker) old Craftsman table saw. It is at least 70 years old and probably more like 85-90. He made a set of rollers for it by hand, but I don't have those. My quad plugs (multiple circuits) are not switched, but I do have an auxiliary breaker box in the workshop. It contains all the basement lights, outlets, and stairlift (eventually :( ) circuits.

Thanks for the valuable input.

Roughly the same vintage as the motor on the upright belt sander that my grandfather built.....and maybe the one on the wood lathe that me made, too.

I've had that monster for 30+ years and never even plugged it in, I still have the one softball bat he turned on it....

Some of those memories are too good to let go.

We're going to try to make that table saw run. Hope I didn't haul it halfway across Pennsylvania for nothing.

Yup.

Ok, you don't know if it runs? Maybe testing it out before running a 220 line would be worth the time vs. cost?

There's no reason it wouldn't run, but no I haven't tested it. I didn't have a 220 line in the old house.

Hey, no guts, no glory.

I'm 90% done.    (Old programmer's joke: The first 90% takes a year of a 1 year project. The remaining 90% takes the next year.)

Hmmm......we always said the 1st 90% took a year, announced that the remaining 10% would take another 5 years, and then delivered right after the 2nd year which made us miracle workers,

OK, enough fun and games.

Here's the latest:
  • Progress was made creating the BOM (Bill Of Materials) and cost estimate for the Weirton Area Museum layout. That's been in progress for the last couple of months. It's done.
  • Computers, including the wife's tablet, WiFi printers, are up and running.
  • I made a laundry room table for my spouse. She's happy, I'm happy.
  • Getting some additional hardware (door locks, towel racks, and other fittings) ordered and delivered by 84 Lumber is taking forever (would help if they didn't keep messing up the order).
  • Appliance hunting is 75% done.
  • Furniture hunting is 50% done.
  • Acquiring workshop & train room lighting is in progress. I have some sample lighting to test. We are investigating LED shop lights for the workshop and LED track lighting for the trainroom. I've been told we need to have the same color rating (Kelvin).
  • The table saw received the correct plug, was tested, and works!!!!

Other than the above and trying to find tools that are hiding from me, I haven't done anything.
