Maple Syrup from the Berkshires is so valuable it's not exported east the Conn River, west of the Hudson, south of the state line unless in direct exchange for Connecticut cheesecake (the one and true cheesecake) and certainly not North of Lake Shampoo.

Just say no to tree sap tapped by the Ben and Jerry socialists who call everything "organic", tell the city folks their maple trees are "free-range", then sneak a little sugar or Karo into the batch in the middle of the night.

Next best I've tasted was from (oddly enough) the mountains in Somerset County PA.

Dunno, I was born/raised (spent the first 1/4 of my life there) in West Mass... Greenfield, specifically;
on the west side of the Connecticut River
10 miles south of Vermont
MP 0 on the Mohawk Trail (east of Gfld, Rte 2 is the French King Highway).
When I was growing up, maple syrup production was essentially zero.
The last time I spent extensive time in Gfld was 3 years ago.
In my neck of the woods there are 2 "tree tappers", one has a stand (Gould's Sugar House) on the Mohawk Trail in Shelburne, the other works off his land in Franklin County. As best as I can tell, neither are "craft" tappers, rather they are families trying to eke out a living in a hard scrabble farm environment.
It may be that in the Lenox/Great Barrington area there may be craft tappers, but, as far as I know, in the Greenfield area of the Berkshires, the tree tappers are nothing more than desperate farmers.

Addenda to my previous post. Remember Karen Allen from the "Indiana Jones" movies? She moved to Great Barrington, MA and established "Karen Allen Fiber Arts"; if you ever get up that way, drop in and say "hi!".

Go north of the Great Barrington townies and get into just north of Pittsfield to Lanesborough, Greylock and through up to North Adams, east through Dalton, Hinsdale, and Summit, west to Richmond and perhaps the state line, you're in that little tiny enclave that has wonderful apples, quince, and the very best in syrup. There are a couple orchards in that little world, so far insulated from the rest of what New England has become (at least until you get to the far North) that are more than crafters or hardscrabblers. It's an odd piece of geography that protects apples, sugar maples, and that sort of thing.

Next you're back East (if you ever return to see family in Greenfield) ask around at the very foot of Greylock or at Bartlett's in Richmond; you're in for a treat, especially the dark stuff. Bartlett's is also the home of the best apple-mash cake doughnut I've ever enjoyed, baked daily and hot before 9AM.

It's all a matter of individual taste, of course. You might not agree it's "better" than Vermont syrup which tends to be a bit heavy-handed/rich for me in comparison but I'd bet you'd really enjoy it.

Appreciate the thots... but at $5/$10 a pint/quart, way out of my price range (as is Karen Allen); I'll go find a decent 6-pack of some sort of IPA.
