Tramp wrote:Anyone know which railroad runs through Albany, NY, these days? I can hear the diesel horn. Sounds lovely coming through the damp night air.

Tramp,

CXS (was Conrail) and Canadian Pacific (was Delaware and Hudson.)

San mentioned once that he could hear it, because he lives in a canyon that funnels the sound.

I never mentioned it, but I can hear it too. It comes up through Robles pass. It seems so strange to hear train horns out here in the desert where you can see no trains.

Wayne,

Tramp is over 200 miles from Albany,NY.Seems more likely he is hearing trains from the old Maine Central which became Guilford which renamed it Springfield Terminal then Pan American [I think] which runs a few miles to the west of where he lives.

That's a "light" beer, laddie,

A Scottish black ale is really completely black and Old Engine Oil is the 1st one that I've had that uses the word "viscous" as a postive descriptor of its qualities.....and, I might add it's also accurate. Potent stuff as well!

You people in Freedonia have some perks we don't have in the Savannah area.

Aye, that might be true, but there's culinary delights in your area that we don't have as well.

I miss the good pickled hot okra of my youth...

Roger,

I know. And I am hearing the UP down in Tucson. It is still eerie to hear trains up here in the desert.

And San is hearing trains on the coast route, not Conrail.

I was just going along with Tramps delusion.

Rufus, I saw a bottle of this beer at Rough&Tumble.
'Viscous', indeed!
They were using it to lube the machinery!

Roger, Tramp was indeed in Albany.
He has a 'vested interest' there!

Tramp, (aka 'guest columnist'), another fine article!
I use a riding mower. 6 gears.
6th gear is for when you're feeling aggravated, aggrieved, pissed-off at the world and all the stupid people on it, or when you promised to have it done before the Redhead got home and you were a few minutes too long on MTJ.
5th is for when you want to be efficient. Get 'er done. Got something else to do, but don't need to be seat-belted like 6th gear.
4th is for that perfect day after you got laid the night before AND that morning, with the birds singing, the cicadas humming, and the kids laughing, when the sun's shining warm on your skin and a soft breeze has the tallgrass swaying and the cumuli are sending long shadows to crawl over the hillsides.
3rd gear is for the atomic hangover when the neurons are sluggish, when you need the extra lead-time to successfully negotiate a 45-degree turn without running into the tall stuff or a tree or the poleshed.
1st and 2nd? Beats me. Never used them. But then, I never yet had to pull a dead republican out to the back field for burial. :D

Loved the Belfast article too. It's an awesome town. That's why I went on the 'walkabout' that fine morning when I was up to visit, that morning when you were too hungover to even SEE morning.
LOL

Dirt,

Glad to hear that Tramp was in Albany.

Those mower musings are familiar.

Andre,

If you did not like the Guiness either it was too cold or it's just not your cup of tea. The Old Engine Oil is a lot heavier and probably not to your liking. Needs to be just barely chilled, chocolate & coffee flavors come out nicely then, but that viscosity.......YIKES!

Something perhaps more to to your liking might "Wee Heavy". Comes in a British pint bottle and I split those with my mother-in-law. Can't beat that combination,

Dark heavy ale is not for me. When I spent some time in England I loved going to the pubs. The atmosphere and food was always great! But those pints of dark ales served at room temperature ... YUK!!!
I like my beer light, smooth and served ice cold. :)

Then again, it wouldn't be a good thing if we all liked the same thing. :)
