A Metrolink commuter train carrying 222 people collided head-on with a Union Pacific freight train during the Friday afternoon rush, killing at least 18 people, injuring 100 others. The freight engine pushed the commuter engine back into the first car killing most of those that have been found dead. Rescue workers are still trying to get people out of the lead car at this time (six hours and counting.)
The previous worst disaster in Metrolink's history occurred on Jan. 26, 2005, in suburban Glendale, when Juan Manuel Alvarez, 29, parked a gasoline-soaked SUV on railroad tracks. A Metrolink train struck the SUV and derailed, striking another Metrolink train traveling the other way, killing 11 people and injuring about 180 others. Alvarez was convicted this year of murder for causing the crash. He was sentenced to 11 life sentences on Wednesday, August 20, 2008

Funny thing, when I originally showed the pic to the Redhead, she saw it in a nanosecond, but then, were about as perfectly matched a pair of misfits as could be found together.
Any idea how they wound up on the same track?

We probably will not know until the NTSB ( http://www.ntsb.gov/Publictn/R_Acc.htm ) files their official
report. Before then it is all opinion and speculation.
I can offer speculation on this one. Having watched on-board camera videos of train wrecks (youtube) and
read NTSB reports on similar wrecks, this one looks like the same old "running the red light charlie"
accident.
First, Tyrrell is wrong. All the trains in that area run on one track.
----SPECULATION----
There is only one track on this route with sidings for passing. The freight and commuter trains were to
meet at the siding near Stoney Point Park where the freight train was to wait in the siding. The freight
train was late arriving, but the engineer and conductor both reported a green light into the siding.
They saw the passenger train coming fast, but because they had the green light, they assumed that the
commuter train had a red light and would stop. As they approached the turnout, it became obvious that
the commuter was not going to stop, so the conductor ordered, "JUMP!" The engineer shouted, "No, we are
in a safe cab, I am riding it out!"
The commuter driver said that he had a green light and wondered why the freight train was not in the
siding. Then, he saw the freight coming around the corner from Stoney Point Tunnel. He thought, "Oh S***!"

Most of the media is reporting that the freight pushed the commuter engine backwards into the first coach.

Found this on New York Times site. The freight train is still partially in the tunnel.

A commuter train engineer who ran a stop signal was blamed Saturday for the nation's deadliest rail disaster in 15 years, a wreck that killed 25 people and left such a mass of smoldering, twisted metal that it took nearly a day to recover all the bodies.
A preliminary investigation found that "it was a Metrolink engineer that failed to stop at a red signal and that was the probable cause" of Friday's collision with a freight train in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley, Metrolink spokeswoman Denise Tyrrell said. She said she believes the engineer, whose name was not released, is dead.
Just got some info that the engineer was Rob Sanchez, Metrolink Engineer.
