Hev, count 'em---one hundred and thirty-five miles per gallon. 135 MPG. My dad traded a Porsche windshield for the bike in 1958. That's where I live now, on the LE Velocette forum.

It has a seat for Daisy! She's stitching up a repair. Has luggage bags for the beer as well.

Took the kids to the "team penning" at the Benton Rodeo last night.

In a large dirt arena, 18 calves cluster at one end, with numbers around their neck. There are three-each of numbers 0 through 7. At the other end, in the middle, a 3-sided pen, with it's opening facing away from the calves.

Teams of 3 riders, one team at a time, gallop down from the far end, the clock starting when they break the beam from an electric eye. As they approach the calves, a number is called-out over the PA system. The team then has 60 seconds in which to cull-out and 'pen' as many of that number as they can.

The difficulty is in keeping the rest of the herd below a spotter sitting a third of the way up toward the pen. A single calf of the wrong number going past the spotter stops the clock and results in a disqualification.

The fun is in that calves are a animal with a strong 'herding' instinct. They don't WANT to be separated-out. Moreover, they don't APPRECIATE a horse and rider wading into them. Too aggressive an entry into the herd and they want to scatter in all directions.

The skill is as 1 rider attempts to separate-out a numbered-calf, the other two must keep the rest of the herd contained below the spotter, not an easy thing to do, as their job can be made drastically harder by an overly aggressive separator.
The separator must work quickly, however, and is dependent on the skill of the 'herders' to keep the rest contained, while those herders also must make sure that any calf already separated-out doesn't try to rejoin the herd. They gotta be looking and moving everywhere at once.
They ALL help to find the calves, a difficult chore while wading into a mass off anxious and annoyed calves all milling around... (yelling "The little one in the middle!" "Just to your right,.. black with a white face!", etc), and it then reguires a different kind of teamwork at the other end getting them around and into the pen in the middle of the arena, without one slipping past to try to rejoin the herd. It's a gradual 'tightening of the noose', and each rider must be in the right place reacting in the right manner.

In all cases, it requires both highly-coordinated teamwork and excellent horsemanship. Here, the ladies can be as proficient as any male. It is very obvious which riders worked with their horses. If there is a calf making a break for it, and you 'ask' your horse to wheel and gallop, and it doesn't respond on the proverbial-dime, your team's out of the money right quick.
And 60 seconds passes quickly.

Can't be bashful, either, or reserved. Whoops, hoots, yelps, and hollers can go a long way towards the deterrence of a calf from a break for freedom.

Very frenetic, but it's entertaining and amusing in the extreme.

The Redhead's dad used to do this competition, and he was damn good, him and his horse "Doc". 'Doc' responded like they shared the same nervous system, and when they chased a steer up the arena, Doc's nose would be in so close he could have bit the steer on the *** just to provide a tad more 'motivation'.

There are a lot of dilettantes out there just having fun, but there are some riders and some teams that have consummate skills and are fascinating to watch. The winning team penned three calves in 45 seconds. Only one other team penned three. Several penned two.

Lots of teams rode around chasing calves all over the damn freeway. LOL :D

I only say how entertaining it was because I don't want you guys thinking I was there to check out all the young ladies in tight jeans and cowboy boots with their ponytails sticking out from under their cowgirl hats.
Nosiree. And with watching those ladies with their legs wrapped tight around those horses, it's got nothing to do with thinking I might want to be a horse. Nope-er.

BTW, we're going back tomorrow.

Barrel-racing. Calf-roping. Bull-dogging. Bronco-busting. Bull-riding. Clowns. Fireworks at midnight. Yee-haw!!

Pete, I went to a few small rodeos in Farmington, Maine years ago. It was real enjoyable until it suddenly became oddly commercial. The barrels for instance became Coors cans, and some idiot announcer tried to fire up the crowd. Oh, well, the years before that were a delight—very summery and old-style American.

Tramp, no secret, old-style-America has been disappearing fast.
Benton's still a small-potatoes town. The local newspaper will cover it, and it might get 30 seconds on the 11:00 news, but no live coverage, not even close. I imagine there'll be some sponsorship- these folks gotta make a living. But Americana... definitely. They have a troupe of cowgirls in sequins and embroidery do some synchronized riding with flags before stopping in formation for the National Anthem. There will be an announcer on horseback cracking bad jokes all night with a clown as the foil. The clown always gets even, sooner or later. :D They have a 'halftime'-show with different themes, like trick-roping, or acrobatic riding with each foot on a different horse. The rodeo events are for real. The riders get national-points, even though it ain't no "Calgary Stampede". And how those f*ckers tie their hands to the back of a bull and try and ride for 8 seconds is beyond me. 60 seconds in a penning competition seems so short... well, 8 seconds on a pissed-off bull has to seem like 8 minutes. Plus, dogs and burgers and home-fries and nachos and funnel cakes to keep the tattered masses (kids) happy, and some kick-ass fireworks, the evening can't be beat!
And then there's all the babes in tight jeans and... I mean, all the excitement and danger! :D

Well, time to go! 8)

DIRT,
I use to play in a GOLF tornament up there in BENTON. It was our annual Mansfield State College alumni football Golf outing. Nice place a the course and loved looking at all the big trout in the hatchery there and in the creek at the golf course. Later we would all stay a buddies cabin on the Fishing Creek and have a good nite at SAVAGE HOLLOW BAR. But can't remember the bull at the bar is that something new?

Laz, that was Mill Race Golf Course, and yes, that hatchery is cool.

(They have a long section of the stream fenced on two ends with chicken wire so the fish can't make their escape. They've been there forever, they're HUGE, and relatively tame.)

We run the kids up there every so often. They sell a bag of fish food for 25¢ on the 'honor'-system. Turns the water into a boiling mass of fish flesh. :D It's no wonder they're so big!

The Savage Hollow Inn is in the valley directly below my south field, maybe 500 yards as the crow flies. You ever get any ice cream at Melanie's Cold Cup?

No, no mechanical bull at the bar, (damn it). That's one of Two-Gun's lairs down in the Lancaster area. 8)

They did have one at the Benton Rodeo. $5 a pop. All three kids tried it. He'd let them ride for $5 worth of time, then crank 'er up and dump 'em real quick. There were the usual young bucks thought they could do it, and some were OK. I really liked the ladies on there, writhing... I mean, I enjoyed the excitement and danger!

Andre, LOL!!
More like a couple of weeks!

Image

I was out trolling the fields, and came up on some wildlife who seemed totally oblivious, as he didn't budge while I came up behind him. I thought 'he's either rabid, or deaf!', but no, I mowed past him not 50 feet away, and when he looked up, he remained totally unconcerned. Took me maybe ten minutes til my pass brought me around to the homestead. I got my camera and got back to mowing, and when I got back down there to that field, he was still wandering around, but as he was approaching the 'hedgerow', I had to get pics at a much greater distance.
