Hobo Jungle
Indian summer has migrated west. Mid fifties low, eighties by about 1:00 PM. Saw some Bettys this morning at the Cardiff Reef wearing sweaters and mufflers. We are lightweights out here, but those of us in the water know summer's over. Nothing particularly distinguishing on my part in the water (never is) and poor, choppy form, but the outer break was about 250 yards from shore and there were intermediate breaks all the way in. Endless waves and free rides, a hobo's dream.
Accomplished absolutely nothing with a mid day nap, a long awaited rest cure. There is something about being in the water that yields a deep, dreamless, restorative sleep.
A fast fixie bike ride along Nepture Avenue with a friend during sunset and twilight got the appetite going for dinner with the loved one and a couple of glasses of Aussie Shiraz. Life is good.

You oughta take a camera with you so that you can show us what your area is like.
When my wife and I vacationed in San Diego, we took our bicycles. The area is paradise for cyclists. All the beach roads and trails are flat. (It's like going down hill both ways compared to Tucson.) We did Balboa Park (tropical plants instead of cactus,) Silver Stand Blvd from Coronado Island to Imperial Beach (marines were digging holes in the sand and filling them back up
) and then a short ride on Coast Blvd in La Jolla.

You got it exact with the snap from Neptune. That is the scene. Ended this evening's ride at Swami's and a sitdown in the meditation garden. After a time, Jahan met me with the 4Runner to load the bike and go home, but, we stayed there for a lingering time in the pleasant darkness. It was the place many years ago I proposed to her and she accepted. As the song goes, "I gave my best kiss and she gave it back again" - Tom Petty. We are very Christian, but open to many things. Paramhansa Yogananda has created a following that I may not agree with, but, I feel, he founded a holy place. It is a spiritual vortex in which one can feel the presence of God. The monks quietly sweep and tend the gardens, koi ponds, and work to preserve the cliffs. They are gentile and serene, and most respectful. They know of our relationship, Jahan's Persian heritage, my curious background, but accept us as "special people" and always allow us some latitude in our presence there. We are most blessed.

San, that was very interesting. I remember when I was a kid, my father took me along with him on a 'retreat' to a monastery in Vermont. It was a fascinating experience. Now, I'm not saying it was the presence of God, (though, in my life, I've always tried to keep an open mind), but compared to most every other hectic, noisy, media-overwhelmed, crazy location in this world, a place that is specifically set-aside for peace, solitude, quiet, self-sufficiency, and singleness of purpose can be a startling experience. Remember, this was filtered through the eyes of a school-ager, but it was remarkable enough that I remember it clearly to this day.
There has been a time or two in my life where I have gotten sufficiently weary of ... what? This culture/society? ... that I have thought that to withdraw from it in such a way might be a worthwhile endeavor.
If it only weren't for that damn 'celibacy' thing...

into the dapper, young prince that I am
and then, my sweet, we can marry

seasoned in a white wine and onion cream sauce,
she chuckled and thought to herself:
"I don't f*cking think so."

'celibacy' is not necessarily a requirement at the Self Realization Temple here in Encinitas. Some of the monks are buffed out surfer Bettys who got tired of corporate world, failed relationships and marriages, high income aspirations, and all of that.
As a Catholic kid, I went on many a retreat, and while they were spiritually uplifting, the ascetic life seemed way too sterile for me. And just plain strange. And, I liked girls.
I do appreciate that we have such resources in our community as the meditation gardens. That the monks open them to the community without spiritual obligation to their point of view or an evangelical sales job speaks well of them. Perhaps they have a different view of what is attractive. It is a blessing. I never leave without putting some bucks in their basket. I don't have to, I want to.

My real burned-out Betty thoughts are that I am going to quit my new professorship and return to my own spiritual temple at home with Tramp. Of every place I've traveled looking for spiritual engagement and authenticity, and I really have traveled the world looking for this, our home is the place with the most.
When I told my Dad I wanted to do this, he said, "but you're far from retirement age." The thing is, he's a doctor not a monk. I'm a monk of my own order. and I take that very seriously.
Including the highly developed spiritual sex element. Besides, there'll be plenty of time for celibacy once I'm dead.
