ANG, howboutit!
I have a motorcycle engine in my garage, a split case arrangement, in which the engine and tranny were all one case. I left the pistons attached to the crank, with all the tranny gears and crankshaft sitting in the bottom half of the case, the upper with the cylinders being gone. You can take the two pistons in hands, and work them up and down, and watch all the tranny gears a-goin', and you can shift them too, by pushing the dogs around. Probably not too many people would consider that a thing of beauty, and the Redhead thinks I'm daft. I'm too old to care. If she weren't around, I'd have it on display in the living room, but she is, so I for sure don't.
If you're married, you know what I mean. LOL

Two more pics tonight, just so you guys can see the art of the craftsman, and ponder about the personality that would go to this beautiful trouble.

Here's two WORKING miniatures.
First, a STEAM-tractor, fully functional. The buckets give you the scale.

Image

And a working baler, same scale. They had been feeding it straw, and it had been by-gawd spitting out miniature bales.

Image

Unbelievable. 8)

ANG,

There is a link on the other side ("Catfight") about a rant in some Hezbolah forum about HO being more detailed than larger scales.

Nonsense.

Petey and Hev,

How much fun can two hobos have in one day? I am delighted for you guys and tempted to join you for one of these adventures.

Jon and Tramp,

The yard reminds me of both of you. Wisteria is wrapping itself around everything as I remember it from the South and the Hydrangeas are showy. Wisteria flowering occurs here in March/April; at this time they are leafy and shooting out. Our Hydrangeas do not get to that size and remain dwarfed by local ecology; but they are still very nice to behold.

Pete, what delightful photos. Where is this show again? I missed that somehow. Is there no concern about grit getting into those Shay gears?

San, as I've probably mentioned many times, our hydrangeas are "tree form" and have a conical bloom. The trees should get pretty large. They're in their fourth year and really showing well this summer for the first time. Every year should be better as long as the witch across the street doesn't have any more strange ideas and malicious intentions. I called the cops when she sprinkled animal bones in bizarre patterns in D's garden. Then she cut down all our tulips. Nice neighbor, eh?

Jon, she looks a lot like that but less green. She does these weird screaming rituals every full moon night. They end exactly at 12PM. I had to erect sawhorses in the front of my yard because she drove across the grass to kill all our flowers. Nice, eh?

Jon, which 3rd Rail engine were you pointing out for me?

Pete or Hev, Who built the "SHAY"? And it's a one cylinder model? Must be an interesting sound. Let's see now, How many chuffs would that be per revolution? Is that prototypical?

Nothing sweeter than plant ripened pineapples; no bitter acidy taste.

Finally, laurie's orchids

I know we have better pics of these but I can't find them right now.

Tramp, Hopefully a trip to your neighborhood will happen. When it does, if you don't mind me drunk and naked in your backyard with a hula-hoop and a jar of mustard for about twenty minutes, I believe I could scare her off for good. :D

Jon, I can understand the use of whipped cream, but mustard is probably too kinky even for a witch.

Rogruth, excellent questions, and... I don't know. Maybe Hev will, when he checks back in.

More on the show. ANG mentioned hit-or-miss engines. They were everywhere at the show, running every conceivable implement:, saws, planers, cement mixers, washing machines, stone crushers, corn shellers, feed grinders, ice cream makers, well water pumps, DC generators, you name it. What a boon these must have been to rural Americans in the early 20th century, where for most of the country, no electrical power grid was available, and work had to be done by hand, and after sunset came darkness.

These are single cylinder four-cycle gasoline engines with heavy flywheels to carry the momentum, (and pulleys to allow the work), but they have a governor that allows the engine to fire only when the RPMs drop. The result is a *thump* after every 4 or 5 revolutions, and it creates a 'beat' that is both intriguing and pleasant to the ear. They work like f-ing plow horses, too, and never get tired or need feeding. You get in the middle of a bunch of them, and the syncopated chuffing, clicking, and whumping is extremely hypnotic. A tape of this would make a very suitable thing to play in your kid's nursery to get him/her to sleep!

You'd have to hear one of these to have any appreciation of what I mean.

Image

This is a horizontal cylinder. Notice the 'cooling' system, the box atop the cylinder. Water would circulate through drillings around the cylinder and through the head. Hot water in this box, adjacent to the cylinder, would then rise and release it's heat to the open air, creating a thermal circulation system of the utmost simplicity.

Notice the carts. A farmer could pull these anywhere on the farm that he needed it's power.

Image

This one was more developed, and had a water pump driven off the crank. The water was then delivered to the conical screen on the galvanized tank on the far side, where it would shed it's heat as it ran down the screen and into the tank, with cool water drawn off the bottom for recirculation. A rudimentary radiator, of the utmost simplicity!

The ignition was fascinating. The intake valve was locked closed (to save gas), and the exhaust valve locked open (to prevent compression from slowing it down), until the RPM drop allowed the valves to operate and fire a spark, after which they were mechanically locked-out again! 8)

Beautiful old cast iron. The art of the forge!

Then they had a building-full of the BIG-ASS hit-or-miss engines!

Image

Notice the HUGE rocker arms, with the external camshaft.

Image

And the piston, oh, maybe 18 inches in diameter!!

Image

And some serious flywheels. 6 feet in diameter. Jon or Hev could lift one. Me and Tramp would have to double up.
Notice, too, they couldn't just make a bare rim. They had to 'fancy' it up.

The Art of the forge.
