Weekend Photos - January 2021

Postby healey36 » Fri Jan 01, 2021 1:34 pm

Start the new year off with a bang (or a bust):

Image

At the last minute, I got nervous about going without any webbing. I didn't want to go the cardboard-strip-and-hot-glue route as I figured that would add a lot of weight. Instead, I decided to go with some strategically placed bits of blue-tape. I figure it only has to stay in place long enough to get the shell in place and dry...we'll see if that's a bad theory.

So then papier-mâché...brought back a lot of memories of high school art class (including the redhead that taught it). A few lessons came back with rather jarring results. For instance, make your bits of paper too big, and try to cover as much form as possible without providing enough overlap, and the whole thing just slides down into a sticky mass at the base. Weight versus surface area, you gotta keep that in balance. For paste, I went with the 50% white glue and 50% water recipe. It seemed to work okay from a saturation/tackiness perspective, but I won't know how structurally strong it is until it dries. I used paper bags from the market, well crumpled (to break down the structure of the paper), and torn into strips, not cut (you need that feathered edge from a tear to get things to bond nicely).

I only did half of it, figuring I wanted to see the results in case I need to alter the process/recipe or just tear it off and go with Plan B (plaster cloth). My artist friend tells me you need to do a couple of layers.

By now you're probably thinking I'm a masochist. I'm almost inclined to agree with you.

Here is one from a 7 year old. It's getting hard to find paper bags

Nice crumpled paper effect, rocks, trees, faux waterfall, and a backdrop...what's not to like?

The county introduced a plastic bag ban last year, but it was deferred for reasons associated with the pandemic. Once things return to something akin to normalcy, the ban will go into effect. The grocery store we go to has already started stocking increased numbers of paper bags (to be honest, they've always had them, you just needed to ask for them). Other than those reusable bags, what else are they going to provide to put your stuff in?

The local Walmart will not let us use re-usable bags at this time so I am acquiring a large quantity of trash bags.

Yep, you’re not supposed to use reusable bags at our market either, although I’ve seen folks bring them in. The back of the SUV is loaded with reusable bags...seems we were getting them from everyone for awhile.

You need to ask for paper at giant. They now let people self checkout with their own bags. all they hand baskets are removed from the store. I guess carrying a basket will spread a virus quicker than pushing a cart. :?

I have a collapsible unit that fits in the back of my Outback. I'd use it but after filling it, I'm not sure if i can lift out up into the car.

What is the problem with using reusable bags? I thought that eco-sensitive thing to do.
May be some chains have contracts for or a big stockpile of throw away bags.
Have not heard of anything like this in our area. Most grocery stores are selling reusable bags. ???

Walmart, the markets and stores have no control of if the reusable bags have been sanitized because of the virus.

When the shopping carts are brought back in they are sanitized now.

I don't know how Costco does it but Sam's club brings all the boxes up to the front for people to use. No bags

I agree, what's wrong with reusable bags? Hasn't the notion that the virus is spread by unclean surfaces been largely discarded? I recall when this all started, they said clean your grocery items with bleach or cleaning wipes before bringing them into your house. Then later the CDC, as I seem to recall, said no-no, that's unnecessary.

Sprays down the carts outside in the parking lot.

And since they are not handling them, where's the problem??

Giant allows reusable bags. Their employees are not allowed to fill them. Only the customer may bag them. Our Giant had an entrance and a seperate exit vestibule with a person directing traffic. No one has a broken door. people need to exit through the entrance. this has been going on for two weeks now. they don't maintain this store at all.
While I'm on the topic of doors. Anybody notice Walmart has exit and entrance doors on the wrong side ? Our local Walmart has you using the leftside door.

At our Walmart they have a north and south entrance. On the north entrance you enter on the left side. That's where the carts are at and exit on the right side. On the south entrance it is the opposite. Again you enter on the side the carts are on.

They have monitors at both that record how many enter and leave.

Safeway here has same entrance and exit with nobody directing traffic. Of course, I'm there at 7 am in a store that's essentially empty.

They have monitors at both that record how many enter and leave.

Everybody monitors and records.

I didn't want to go the cardboard-strip-and-hot-glue route as I figured that would add a lot of weight.

I think the 2x6 framing met your weight quota

Looks really good!.....shaping up nicely.
