PRR Locomotives

Note that the Scale Craft K4, crude as it is, has the lines of a PRR K4. Others have missed seriously, including USH (they copied the incorrect boiler contour in the MRR Cyclopedia).
The model begs for smokebox and firebox rivet detail, and the cab simply needs replacement (at least the wrapper). In Jim's example, Joe F. needs to trade drivers with an SP P-13 that has the straight counterweights. Trackside Specialties cast some of those trailing truck supports, and CLW has a really nice trailing truck casting. The sand dome needs a petticoat (easy) and the boiler needs bands (easy if you have .010 brass and an 80 Watt iron).

The Scale Craft tender without rivets is satisfactory. Only one of my K4s has rivets on the tender.

And with some care, one could trim those steam pipes on the cylinder block. I have not tried that, but maybe the next one . . . I will model #1737 as delivered, and will attempt the trim job.

A couple hundred is max for these - even with 2-rail drivers, and even the ones I have modified that are out there in the market. But a PRR nut with a sense of history needs at least one. Opinion. Surprisingly, your options for a quality K4 in O Scale are limited - USH is out. Max Gray and Sunset are OK. The rest are either die cast and inaccurate, or in the multi-thousand range, an entirely different branch of the hobby.

Bob, you forgot about the PSC version. An in between run of the mill K4s and the unbelievable Kohs. Captures the post war version rather well. Opening journal lids, sand some lids, access doors, etc. Snagged well below retail value. Now to find a Kohs, well well well below retail value! I may get around painting this one someday to represent K4s 5372.

Nothing definitive but Kalmbachs "Steam Locomotives" says the last F class on PRR were retired in 1928.

No, I only ask because I like to see the "modern" versions of 19th century wheel arrangements like Moguls, Americans, 10-wheelers etc.
SP's "Mexican Mallets", C&IM 4-4-0's, Rdg Class L 10-wheelers come to mind . Trying to imagine your F class here with piston valves, some kind of valve gear, generator and electric headlight.

I should note - twin power, all axles driven with CLW transmissions, 12 wheel electrical pickup. Have not checked the sprockets lately, but last time I tested it, it would pull anything hooked to it - probably even my Mustang Convertible!

I don't own any Diseasels, so can't contribute any of those! I do have a few PRR Cabin Cars. Here is an N5 by Kohs and an N6a by Alco. 40+ year time span on when each were produced. The N6a got its first paint job just last year. I have a few wooden cabins too, one that I built and another I purchased already finished, but I dont think I have photos of those on my tablet yet. Maybe tomorrow.

Roger, yeah, I've been known to try to fool others, but mostly in HO scale. Some do admit that they had to go back and look again. I have a bunch of pics, some alright and some pretty good, but they're HO and not sure if it is ok to post here. But here is one I'm quite fond of. A K4s simmering on standby duty.
