What were the stats before the pandemic? Only 30-40% of kids proficient in language and math? America spends more per student for education than any country in the world, and American teachers are among the most highly paid, yet the more we spend the worse things get.

6th in the world on salary; does just go to show throwing money at a problem is not the solution; quality of teachers used to far higher and other part of the equation being parental involvement might be at an all time low.

Relating back to when I went to school we were taught to respect the teachers by our parents and the school. The last thing any of us wanted was the school to call our parents that we were a problem. There would be hell to pay at home. Today it seems like the teachers have to put up with a lot of unruly kids ? But I could be wrong....

I can't imagine what it's like for a teacher in a gang and drug infested area. That didn't exist where I went to school. But I suppose it did in some areas because I remember seeing the movie Blackboard Jungle.

There's always been areas like that.......more often than not either denied, or hidden from the rest of the population.....over in that other side of town....

My friends daughter teaches in a school with this problem. she is an elementary school. Located in Hazleton pa. a coal cracker town. Filled with the latin kings gang. Twice a month they have a meeting with Pa's state police (Drug enforcement div.) Teachers are instructed not to discipline certain kids. It could have life changing repercussions for the teacher. During parent teacher night they serve meals and give out meals to go. Otherwise not many parents would show up. We have a lot of children in this country nobody give the time of day to. It's sad. In an odd way i'm happy about this 2 month stay at home order. I had a ton of fun with my daughter.

Nicknamed Dr Doom for his gloomy predictions, Professor Roubini said there are some jobs that simply will not come back after this crisis.

Even if the global economy recovers this year from the impact of the coronavirus, it will be "anaemic".

He warned of "unprecedented" recession. Professor Roubini foresaw the financial crisis in 2008 before many others.

"During the global financial crisis it took about three years until output fell sharply," he told the BBC's Talking Asia programme from his home in New York.

"This time around it didn't take three years, not even three months. In three weeks there was a freefall of every component."

I don't know what it's going to be or how fast anything is coming back, but it's not going to be fast and it's not going to be what it was before, and a lot of people are going to have to get used to that fast. Adapt and move forward....and stop looking backwards to what everything was cause we're not going there.

I'm afraid you are right. But I don't have to like it. It will be hard for my wife and me but I suspect we will use up our allotted time.

Problem is that they will take it from there and spread it to unsuspecting relatives and strangers. I am not against a good time. Keep them all locked up together for a month.
The threat of death is not quite as great as financial ruin. What does a week or two in ICU cost?
