old boxcar inner side query

Postby ScaleCraft » Mon Jan 27, 2020 4:00 pm

Going through this junk, I found two sides. Plain. No grooves, paint....and they feel like really stuff cardstock or possibly Masonite.
One has the doorway punched out (pre-cut), the other is intact...the pushed out plug is in the box.

Comet?
Or was this the inner liner to A-N or Athearn steel sides?

I can't remember.
Dave....gone by invitation

I dimly (!) recall that Reynolds boxcar kits had inner cardboard sides. I may even have in my infinite stash of unbuilt kits.

Athearn used what you describe in their box car kits to support the steel sides. I don't think All Nation did so.

You're correct. Reynolds took over Athearn.

Correct. My first O Scale car was the Athearn "feather" boxcar. Purchased in 1955 from Lloyds in Baltimore. Punched card stock. Pretty substantial. I replaced it with basswood. I also soldered everything on - roof ribs, ladders, door slides. Today it is heavily weathered with actual corrosion. Still rolling.

As the literacy rate declines, you’ll ask yourself why the quality of life continues to deteriorate in ways large and small, and in almost every instance the answer will be: because people stopped reading.
