Those running out of oil stories from the 20th century were used as a form of scare tactics to get people to buy smaller cars and use other forms of energy. Of course this is my opinion and I think it worked.

That's one way to look at it. Another way is to look at the available data for the basis of those statements and apply the forecasting tools they had at the time. We now know that the calculations of known/proven reserves was way off from the actual situation. Consumption figures did not take into account the increased efficiencies we have achieved over the last 40 years. My full size 2017 sedan with V-6 and automatic transmission beats my old 1971 compact four banger with 4 on the floor. The sedan gets 30 mpg on a freeway at 70mph with the AC running full blast. The 4 banger struggled to get to 22 mpg at 60 mph and no AC.

People's choice of cars is driven by market factors. When gas is cheap we buy big cars. When it's not, we tend tp buy smaller. Gas prices are driven by market forces that have little or nothing to do with how much oil is still in the ground. It's usually geopolitical in nature. Before someone goes off on that's why we need to have our own sources remember that oil is a commodity. Its price is driven by its market value. If we were the number one producer of petroleum US citizens might still be faced with higher gas prices if someone else was willing to pay more for the product. It's just business.

And now we have the existential crisis. Our world is doomed if we don't make immediate changes and stop using oil to burn.

I could make the same statement that Decaprio made and no one would notice.
I need to get rich and famous so my sayings will get noticed. :)

I remember back in the early 60's that if my friends and I had $2 we had enough for gas for a full day's riding around. Gas was $ .25 per gal.

They are also good for making O scale trolleys:

The three above cars were made out of ESSO metal oil cans by Bill Robbins more that fifty years ago. The other side of the white car is not painted and still shows the ESSO printing. the car was built by Bill to demonstrate using oil cans for carbuilding and to advertise the WB&A Tractioneers.

Once you get rich you can do like the rich. Leonardo DiCaprio has a mega yacht, thousands of sq ft mansion, private jets and a private island. He doesn't give a crap about the planet. Only for himself.

Well.
I'm 85 now and my wife and I live on our Georgia teachers retirement and we are not physically ( and probably not mentally ) able to do much more than visit doctors and drug stores to get the meds that keep us going so we're not too likely to do anything that bring us the attention that DiCaprio has or
others like him. I hope to not live long enough to see our country change to one that would be unrecognizable to my grandparents who raised me and one in which my grand and great grand children will not have the freedom that we have had. I realize that can be interpreted many ways but I think I have seen a real loss of freedom in much that we do because of political correctness. I would not make it through a week of teaching today because of the way I treated students. I was not afraid to touch a student or talk with them about their personal problems because I was treated this way. I did not mince words with parents about their little darlings who never did anything wrong at home. Now a little of my ego talking. I taught in eight school systems in three states for forty-three years full time and six years part-time and was always rehired and working on a longer contract. I have been through many changes in programs mostly forced on states supposedly to improve education that has not seemed to work but gave federal government more control of local government. I was opposed to the U.S. Department of Education when it began and I still am.
Of course this is just my opinion and it is not as important as DiCaprios.
Many do not understand when I say one thing that I did not get to do that I wanted to do was serve in our armed forces. I am a supporter of our country.
End of another Roush rant and rave. Thanks for allowing me to.

It was nice to see you allow yourself to express yourself so frankly. Bravo. It was an interesting read, to me.

I just read it again and it seems choppy probably because I removed a lot before it was posted.
Thanks for reading something you would not find on other train forums.

I would offer the observation that evolution in transportation in the USA has been crucial to immense changes throughout society. To change from dirt "roads" and country lanes, moving around on foot or astride horses, and riding in carriages, to the modern automobile and trucks and motorcycles, is immense. Just considering the changes in cars from what I drove of the mid-50's and 60's to the electronic gewgaw laden contraption I have today, is amazing, to me. I'm not so sure I need all the "conveniences" available to me via my dashboard, in my 2018 GL, but I accept their presence, even if I don't ever access them. I do like and use the GPS system, though, as well as the "Embrace" feature, which I have had occasion on long trips to find very useful, even safety-enhancing.

I would imagine that when people find themselves unable to drive any more, it must be devastating. There have been occasions, fortunately rare, so far, when I have noticed an elderly person walking with loaded bags alongside the same roadway I was driving on the way homeward from the grocery store, ferrying their groceries. From such sights I have concluded they do not have access to a car any further and must do the best they can with what strength they have available to them. The isolation of being elderly and limited must be frightening.

Access to or ability to drive? Unable - here's where services such as Uber, etc. fill a need.

Good point, provided a person can afford them.

Distance vs. amount of groceries / funds = possibilities.

Cost is part of the equation but a lot of these folks chose not to avail themselves of free or very low cost alternatives like shuttles or church organized group transport. I don't want to shop on Thursday morning, I want to go on Tuesday afternoon. I don't like the other people in the group, they take too long, .....

BTW, some of those folks are actually doing the walking for exercise which isn't necessarily a bad idea. If they're out there in inclement weather that's a different story.

All too true.
