Forgot about Jameco.
BTW, our local Radio Shack had fallen down to the point that it was mostly a cell phone service center. If i wanted components locally I had to had over to "Electronic Connection" in Westland (two towns over).

We have a new store in town called .Batteries Plus. One day i'll run in. Take a look and see what the plus is.

Re: Missing RadioShack
Batteries plus is a good store for obscure batteries or normal ones plus odd bulbs and I think cell phone repair

Re: Missing RadioShack
Batteries Plus can also "refresh" NiCad/NMh battery packs for long out of production power tools assuming the tool is actually worth the cost of replacing the dead cells.

Re: Missing RadioShack
Hmmm, that's interesting. I have a couple of really nice battery-powered hand-drills with shot packs. I wonder if it would be cost-effective to get replacements.

All Electronics has been my 'go-to' electronics/surplus store since the '70's.
The store has 'vintage' electronic equipment displayed, including some of the stuff I used when I was younger.
I would recommend getting their paper catalogue, (updated several times a year) if for nothing more than throne room reading.

If you search around online, you can find instructions on how to rebuild older battery packs. Many of them are just rechargeable AA-batteries soldered/connected together, then encased in a plastic shell.

Re: Missing RadioShack
I only ever had one NiCad powered tool, so it is not a BIG issue with me......but I am curious how many charges the newer Lithium Ion packs will take? I have a pretty nice selection of corded tools, and I have debated with myself, the need to go to battery power. If I were a Pro probably yes, but as an occasional handy??? man, I think not so much. Maybe I should wait for the model powered by dilithium crystals!
I'm guessing the tool manufacturers are selling more crap than ever.

Re: Missing RadioShack
I hate to admit it, but I've gone back to corded gear. I'm sick up and fed with having to replace battery packs after less than a year's use. It's a PITA, but I've replaced my string-trimmer, by leaf-blower, my power drills, and my hedge-trimmer with old-school corded versions (string-trimmers were gas-powered, all three of them). That and a hundred-foot power cord and I'm good to go.
Re: Missing RadioShack
I have several Porter Cable cordless 18v Ni-cad tools. I have had them for 6/7 years without any trouble and the batteries are still good. I have extra batteries for them.
I just bought one of the new Porter Cable brush less 20v lithium drills. These are $119 at Lowe's. I got mine off of Walmart.com delivered to the store for $82 dollars.

In the past I had a couple of 18v Ni-cad drill from Harbor Freight. Cheap but not worth a crap.
My favorite corded drill is a Milwaukee angle drill.

Re: Missing RadioShack
I'm corded also. Tired of bad batteries, different chargers and low power. Electric trimmers are better then gas. They are lighter biggest plus is they don't gum up from stale gas. If i let a gas trimmer sit for a month it's hard to start and runs bad.

My ~5 year old battery powered mower is still going strong along with the matching string-trimmer and leaf-blower. The original batteries for my DeWalt drill died after a few years, but the replacement Li battery is great. What is failing now is a little mini-Dremel that Sarge gave me; I use it a lot but the battery pack seems to be fading. Have to see what can be done about that soon.
Only a few know, how much one must know, to know how little one knows.

I have a Dremel MiniMite with a fading battery as well. I've tried looking around for a replacement, either from Dremel or a 3rd-party, with no luck. If you find something, let me know. It's a damn handy little tool.
