Bob,
Don't be all that impressed. The tires were made years ago. Eliminate making the tires and it ain't all that bad.

Jon,
One truck is reassembled with O Scale wheels. Once I assemble the other two axle sets, I'll install them and see if it runs. They are insulated on one side and, hopefully. the trucks are isolated electrically from the frame. Wipers or plungers are recommended.
I'm sure all my old drafting teachers are rolling over in their graves and will deny I was ever one of their students. Without a sketch I'd be lost and make even more mistakes than I make now.

I agree. Cutting drivers is fun if you already have tires.
Speaking of which, one of the spoked sizes I don't have is 45" - a common steam size. Anybody got a large pile of uncut cast iron blanks?

Jay, that’s terrific!!! Thank you for the update!!

Bob,
I do still have a large inventory of uncut CI wheel blanks.
If you would like I'd be happy to send you a listing.

Jon,
Turns out Weaver didn't isolate the metal trucks from the frame. Oh well, all wheels insulated now so no shorts. Absolutely will require wipers or plungers. Oh yeah, the EPA named the trucks an environmental disaster but I sopped up most of the excess oil so they would allow shipping across the US.
On it's way back to you Monday...have fun.
Oh yeah, you get all the old wiring and a plastic bushing that I can't identify (it was laying under the model on the workbench)

Less than the Deep Water Horizon, but more than the Exxon Valdez???
Sorry, couldn't resist that!

Jay, I can’t thank you enough! PM me my bill, please!
Sorry about the excessive oil as I needed it to loosen the hardened gear grease!
Once the oil softened the grease the motors spun right up!
I’ll wiper the wheels and figure out coupler mounting on its return.
Stay tuned!

Jay, awesome work!!! Let me figure out how to bend, insulate, and mount these wipers and we’ll be rolling! (I’m thinking a nylon screw in tapped hole over a thin plastic plate). Any other suggestions appreciated!

Jon,
Looks like it all has possibilities. My first suggestion would have been to buy a 2R model but noooooo, you hadda buy the 3R. I'm sure there will be plenty of ideas bandied about. I would recommend wipers all around...mo is betta!
Good luck and have fun.

Oh, my eye is drawn to that handy relief across the centre of the bottom of the truck, just asking for a rectangular section of printed circuit board to be laminated in there.
Slit the copper so you can solder the pickups in place and pickup wires. You might slit the copper only 2/3 of the way fore and aft, then turn to the side without gears and cut across to finish the isolation, leaving the pad on the gear side with an L shape that goes all the way across to the non-gear side. The result is a smaller square nested in the L and your pickup wires can be soldered to both go up the non-gear side of the truck.

Simples and easily done.
Do not wait to strike till the iron is hot; but make it hot by striking.

Re: 2Railing An Weaver VO-1000 Doable?
Yeah, seems simple but it may not be as easy as it appears. Because the retainer plate sits so low in the truck there is very little of the wheel exposed for the wiper to make contact with. Obviously, this is even worse on the side with all the gears. Another issue could arise if the wipers, mount, wires, etc. extend to low they run the risk of making contact with unwanted portions of the rail or just look unsightly hanging down below the truck. Guess you won't know for sure until you try it.
I was thinking, because there is so much space between the truck side frames and the wheels you might be able to create a bracket, attached to the inside of the side frames and mount the wipers to said bracket. A piece of plastic angle, epoxied to the side frames might suffice.

Also not terribly complicated.....

With perfect 20/20 hindsight, brass angle would probably work (better for drilling and tapping). Just make sure the epoxy acts as an insulator to isolate them from the side frame. In other words, use lots a glue! Oh yeah, easier to drill & tap prior to attachment.
