I was gone all day today so when I got home I have 3 conservation trucks and officers camped out in my front yard. They brought in a bear trap and they fenced it off in my back yard to capture the bear when it comes down. They have the trap baited with BACON. They said it won't come down until tonight.

It used to be they killed dangerous animals that showed insufficient fear of humans. Some states now have a procedure to release such animals, then frighten them, so they'll stay away from people.

Rufus seems to have adopted an interest in baby bears... judging from his current avatar.

Coyotes are becoming a noteworthy problem around here, this Summer.

Thursday, a Fairfield, NJ woman who was walking her 3yr old boy and 16mo. old baby in a stroller found herself being followed - stalked - by a coyote. It attacked her, tried to get at the boy who was walking alongside his mother; then, tried to get at the baby, which it did manage to grab and bite. It bit the mother's arm as she was defending herself and the children.

This happened just a short distance down the road from where I live - actually up river from me. I assume the coyotes (this has not been the first one to be seen by neighbors) are using the stands of trees along the river to relax and introduce themselves into the area.

While I was out walking my 3 miles on Friday, of course, I had my handy-dandy "defense" bag over my shoulder, stocked with my usual sprays, axe handle, short crowbar, and knife. As I walked along, if I came across women walking strollers, I stopped them to ask if they had seen the News about the coyotes. Most had.

Later that day of the attack upon the mother with the children, a coyote began stalking a cop in the nearby park, which he noticed in the nick-of-time and shot dead.

It occurred to me, today, that perhaps a simple can of spray-paint would be an effective defense against coyotes for stroller-pushing moms and loping old guys. I should think a spray of paint in the face, especially in the eyes, would stop a coyote in his tracks, as they say. What do you guys think? Shall I advise the moms about this idea when I come across them, or will I just seem like the neighborhood mental-case if I do so?

No, coyotes are quick, they will dodge the paint. Tell moms to carry a DAZZER and call the local Department of Fish and Game or local law enforcement agency immediately if they are attacked by a coyote, see them approaching a human or showing lack of fear of humans.

Good to learn. Thanks for all that information. The lady and children I mentioned, of Fairfield, were too busy fighting the coyote off, too busy to make phone calls.

For me, I have no idea where to get the device you mentioned, so in the meantime, I will continue to count on my using my arsenal of weapons, and will look forward to splitting a coyote skull wide-open if an attack should present itself. I don't see what else I can do, for the present, which means by 1pm today, when I go out for my daily constitutional.

I would hope the mom and two kids who were bitten were tested for rabies. It is totally unnatural for a coyote to attack a human, even if it's hungry. Mace or other brands of pepper spray will shoot farther than a can of paint.

No. I saw the 3 conservation trucks leave around 11:30 that night in a hurry. No bear in the trap. The one guy came back at 1pm Monday afternoon to get the trap. Asked him what happened. He said the bear came down but wound not go in the trap. Said the bear went over the fence into my neighbors yard and then into the next yard and then into the alley. Said they chased it out of town. Also said they got some spray paint on it's butt. If they see that they will know it's the same bear

He said the bear was a 2 year old and weighed around 150 to 200 pounds. He said think of it as an 18 year old teenager whose mom told it to leave home.

Test - yes! Getting bitten by just about any wildlife should be followed up by medical assessment and such testing.

Generally very true; you'd have to really provoke one to attack a human or do something truly stupid which has its own reward.

Yes, the News has reported, via a televised interview of the mother, that they have received the appropriate medical attention and testing and the shots.

I found it remarkable and eye-opening that the coyote had hold of each of them, at various moments in the attack, the mother by her rear-end, at one point, the boy by a leg, and the 16mo old girl by the head. (I believe I got that right.)
