I wonder if there are any old photos like that of Duquesne, or McKeesport, PA, or of another favorite town of mine, Cortland, NY.

And I think Homestead, PA had a big Jones & Laughlin steel mill, or somewhere close-by, along the river (Monongahela?) I wonder why they had an office building in Woodlawn, PA, as your photo notes.

J & L was down closer to the point, Murph. Second Avenue, I think. I've delivered refractories there. Homestead was U.S.Steel; I worked in the shuttle yard loading trailers for Interstate System Steel Division.

When you came down over the bridge, Murph, U.S.Steel was to your left and under the bridge, somewhat. All of that property was razed and there's a shopping mall or somesuch there now. (Ironic if you think about it. Folks now have new places to spend money, but no place to work to earn any). If you made a right off the end of the bridge, heading down the river, Mesta Machine would have been on your right. Further down, the U.S.Steel Edgar Thompson Works, largest of all of the Pittsburgh mills, would have been across the river on your left.

Precisely. That's how I remember it all, now that you have brought clarity to what was a child's memory from several decades ago, esp. those left and right turn landmarks. Do you recall a ramp, part way up the bridge, which, as you approached Homestead, you could make a quick left down, directly into the mill area. My father used to like to take that shortcut because it avoided that light at the foot of the bridge. In fact, I can recall times he used to have the left side of the car at an angle up on the ballast of the RR tracks, and the right side of the car on the narrow roadway he was so determined to use. I liked those short-cut journeys because I could see directly into parts of the mill, as we inched our way along, with that sun-like glow blazing around things; plus, I got a kick out of my father seeming to use something only a certain few knew existed (in my kid's ,mind, that is.)

Several decades later, upon returning home for a visit and driving my own car, I took that ramp and knew right away something was very different. It was too dark. In fact, at the bottom of the ramp stood a lone street light, instead of the blaze and noise of the mill. I stopped the car and got out, amazed to realize I was alone. The entire mill was GONE. What a moment.
