Quite a number of my 1962 high school graduating class came home in body bags from what was referred to by some as "Nam" ; one in an envelope , we were told. Can somebody - ANYbody - tell me WHY we were there - sacrificed there? What good did it do us?

No one ever willingly admits to being duped and will fight you if you suggest it. I was much earlier and saw the error of my hubristic patriotism. so none of my blood made it to that sand. I have been to Afghanistan when the Russians were there.

Okay, let's remove the word "Sneak" from my statement and go with your conspiracy theory that our government knew the attack was imminent. Obviously some military people warned it was a possible, but to say the government (Roosevelt, his cabinet and others who could make a difference) knew about this and allowed it to happen is ridiculous. Yet, somehow, I do not feel answered.
What is it that I could say, from your answer, that would help my early-high school students who ask, "WHY?" understand ? Huh? Frankly, that felt like a "cop=-out." If you mean that the fact that I cannot think of any answer, low these many decades, means that there is no answer, isn't enough for me. Sorry, though I thank you for your reply. It just sounds like hand-wringing and throwing ones hands up in the air. It doesn't help me understand why my friends are in the ground. They obeyed conscription and went to that hellhole. For what? Russia was backing the north. Remember in the early 60s we almost went to a nuclear war with Russia over the missiles in Cuba. There was a lot of conspiracies in the 60s that Russian was behind the Kennedy assassination.

That's the way I see it.

Thank you. That's the what that happened, about which I am well aware, having grown up from the 40's and into the 60's. It is not the why. Maybe there is no answer for that.
