Mary went into atrial fibrillation on March 12, 2013. She passed out and quit breathing at that time. Not being able to detect a pulse, I started CPR immediately. The paramedics arrived in 15 minutes and tried their automated external defibrillator (AED) but could not get her heart back into rhythm. By the time she arrived at the hospital, she had severe brain damage. After two days the neurologist announced she was brain dead. We took her off of life support and she suffered cardiac arrest March 14, 2013.

Were you just testing what it would be like, or was it an accident?

Mine was an accident. A rock rolled under my foot and tossed me head first into the cactus.

I think mine was accidental in that I was told to sit down on the bench next to my big brother in the
Santa Barbara Botanical Park. There was a barrel cactus next to the bench. I missed the bench, sat
down on the cactus. My brother denied any involvement. I must have been about 6 years old at the time...

I heard of those jumping cacti, but I'm afraid I lumped them in with the jackalopes...they look quite
wicked in your photos. I hope they can't stand freezing weather or else I gotta start patrolling the perimeter
for interlopers!

The cats need no protection. My wife's snake bit one of them three times. Other than total hair loss around the bites and some swelling, the cat acted like nothing had happened.

The cat might have been trying to protect me? In any case the cat was very helpful in retrieving the snake, pounding it on the head with one paw to distract it while I got a grip on the snake's neck and returned it to its cage. And we both learned something we did not know... a cat cannot jump backwards faster than a rattlesnake can strike.

As far as why I would let something bite me in order to catch it, I don't. The bites have always been a surprise while attempting to pick the creature up behind the head so it could not bite me.

And why catch them? Not to get them off the property, but to observe their behavior in captivity. All of God's creations are fascinating.

Here is an unidentified snack the Cat from Hell brought to me a few days ago.

Opuntia bigelovii (Jumping Cholla, Teddy Bear Cholla, Cholla Guera, Golden-Spined Jumping Cholla)
growing in Santa Barbara are known to survive in USDA Zone 9a: to -6.6 °C (20 °F) and USDA Zone 9b: to -3.8 °C (25 °F).
