Maybe it was neater, somehow, for some reason?

Could. Could also drop it down a chute into where it might be transported thereafter to the boilers. Leaving it in a pile outside to be moved yet again seems like something somebody with a shovel would have to deal with later. Coal delivered to my grandparent's was done that way - down the chute into the bin in the basement....

That coal trolley is cool. Perhaps the upper doors are for loading from a facility that already existed when the trolley was built.
You begin flying with a full bag of luck and an empty bag for experience. The object is to fill the bag of experience before you empty the bag of luck.

That's a picture from Crystal Rivers Model's website, Martin. That kit is a dead ringer for the old coal siding building on the NP line in Colfax Washington next to the original depot. I just thought folks would want to know why the high doors in the gondola body. Besides, there's no trains on the front side of the building, so who cares what it looks like.

Pretty cool - the trolley traveling right out to the station; looks good, for any layout touching on that interest or circa, huh.

Can you imagine the dust and dirt that poor motorman was exposed to and inundated with, constantly!

I'd like to see the guy pulling the actuating lever on those side dump doors after the ash cam pouring out!

Then again, it was a job........

While a good distance off from the majority here, Eastern Michigan Rwy had a wooden steeple cab.....
