Taking a little ride over on the Western Maryland for a few cards..............over near Pen Mar....a good distance back in time with those passenger cars.

I've long ago concluded that those car-length, elongated "uplifts" in the roofs were for headroom and ventilation. Have I been right?

The clerestory roof center? Generally for ventilation - vents are in the sides of the raised section and could be opened or closed; a variety of styles as well that also be directional to some extent.

Ol' engine #5...I just picked up a copy of that card. Built by the Hayward-Bartlett Company, "Hayward Bartlett & Company, Stovefounders, Plumbers, Architectural Iron Works, Locomotive Builders, Steam & Hot Water Works".

I just picked up a copy of that card. Built by the Hayward-Bartlett Company, "Hayward Bartlett & Company, Stovefounders, Plumbers, Architectural Iron Works, Locomotive Builders, Steam & Hot Water Works".

Where was that company based?

Interesting train. Just guessing but the loco's proportions, what looks to be a straight stack, slide valves and crosshead driven injector pump place it around 1875-1885. I seem to remember the Monocacy pic having shown up in the Yahoo Civil War Railroading group.

According to Bill Edson Monocacy was delivered to the WM in March 1864 and was retired from service in 1885.
