Sarge, I for one could never stand Picaso's art!!!
Now that you pointed the pilot out, I'm kinda bummed my model looks to have the similar issue.
But still Lee's work is a masterpiece compared to my poor stock T1.




On another note, today is Nat'l No Bra Day as well as Nat'l Yorkshire Pudding Day!

I didn't mean to have people all bummed out, but more as an observation of what it takes to bring a model up a few notches; it's not a trivial exercise.

Lee is a talented and incredibly observant man from what I see.

My musing is more a feeble attempt at understanding why your T1 actually balances nicely between detail, finish, &c to me. You never noticed the pilot and to be honest neither did I in all the photos you've shown of that loco. But, raise the bar in one aspect of the same model and suddenly my eye goes straight to that what suddenly cries out as needing brought up to the same "level" as the new finish.

This begs the question that asks whether there can be such a thing as "too good" in a model, at least to my rather tired old eyes.

Imagine the potential (don't bring cost into this, now!) of a loco after Gary Schrader has broken every bone in its little body, finished by Lee, and with a drive from Jay in it, all aspects brought into an equal and balanced level of neurosis.

Part of the issue is the way the shadow of the field behind meets exactly at the bottom of the pilot, which exaggerates the problem.

If you look at this without glasses . . . at first I thought the track rail below was the correct rail the locomotive was sitting on. Pilot looks fine!

In this case, my eye is drawn away from the finish and jarred by the pilot height off the rail. Now, in person I'd bet the effect isn't nearly so jarring but photography is a merciless thing, especially shot at track level in the case of the pilot height.

Looks that way to me too, and I might be bothered more by the idea that it (the pilot) also appears to be tilted upward.

Sometimes pics fool us. Maybe the real world item is perfect, hard to tell.

Whether any of that is accurate or not does not affect the quality of the weathering. It stands alone, to be liked or disliked, whatever one's preference. (opinion)
