To me, the children in that photo of the Orbisonia Cornet Band, show in their faces the universal motivation in those days for the young to please adults, to become adults as soon as possible, to behave, to win the approval of the adults (not the other way around,) and to be viewed as productive, well-comported co-operative members of American society.

I was just cracking open the door - doubt there is any one singular action, event, etc. that can be attributed.

I do not think all is lost.

However, I do think that there are "environmental" considerations.

Certainly true, esp. if there is a whole town full of dads like you, sir. I thought about you when I wrote that cynical viewpoint, Pete, knowing full well you and your lifestyle were the exception, and pictured the idyllic home you have established for your family, up there in those wonderful Pennsylvania hills (and hoping you will have some new Autumn photos for this year) and hoped my too-close-to-urban-centers life was still being balanced-out somewhere in America.

I saw a piece on a morning news show, today, that had commentators at a ballgame mocking a gaggle of adolescent-appearing girls in the stands who were spending much time taking selfies, constantly, not necessarily of each other, but focused - fascinated - on and with themselves. That seemed significant of something not necessarily positive, to me. "Hundreds and hundreds of photos of themselves," one announcer exclaimed. I found that interesting.

Even Hollywood style celebs do selfies.
I would think they wouldn't need more
photos of themselves but I guess they do.
