You are also an anomaly. Automotive electrical systems of today baffle me, yet you explain them such that I almost understand. Fortunately my OBD-II code reader has been correct on which part to replace so I have been able to fix problems myself. Exception was when I bent the door, computer thought the car was being stolen and shut all systems down. That one went to the dealer.

Although I'm still mystified as to how the use of decimals is equated somehow to the Metric System (or is it merely seen as an opportunity to foment another argue of the merits once again? ), I am convinced that 1/2 of the human population is below average.

Yes, it is for the sake of argument. You can't teach an old dog new tricks, (or maybe he isn't interested in learning). As far as I'm concerned, if it wasn't for needing metric sockets and wrenches in my job, I'd have no time for it whatsoever.

Spring of the year, I'm sitting in a paper mill in Dryden, Ontario, waiting to unload 14 pallets of brick for a bleacher unit, and I'm listenin' to the radio. Guy says the temperature is 12. I wind the window down, (had the engine runnin' with the heater on low, and I'm thinkin', "Damn, it don't feel like it's that cold". It wasn't. So, I add 32 degrees to it, and that seems more like it. I knew I didn't need my heavy coat. To this day, Celsius stills screws me up!

It's a mystery to me as well - decimals apply to any system last I checked.

I am convinced that 1/2 of the human population is below average.

1/2 are certainly below the median, I become more and more convinced every day that it's also not a Gaussian distribution but rather a Poisson distribution.

but rather a Poisson distribution.

As in flounder I presume? Hence one mans met (ric) is another mans poisson. Bottom feeders abound whatever they may call themselves.

Mitch, for a rough estimate of the temperature just double the Centigrade value and add 32. In your example 17 C would estimate at 66 degrees F. Using the accurate formula of 9*17/5+32 yields an accurate value of 62.6F.

I prefer using F because there are 1.8F degrees in one C degree. Almost twice the resolution.

My only takeaway from Catholic grade school and the metric "system" was the damage that could be done to one's person by a nun armed with a meter stick.

I was in second grade when the metric system hit. What a waste of time. Our teachers tried to teach us how to convert everything back to inches or Fahrenheit. mph to kph. meters to yards. These clowns had no clue what was up. Had somebody said screw the inches and just use centimeters it may have worked. We would have to measure a square in centimeters then draw it in inches. Before you could draw the square in inches you would need to do a conversion from centimeters to inches. Why not just use the ruler that i measured the first square with.
On a humorous note. When my Slovakian wife was taking bus driving lessons. She comes home one day and says " wtf. you people are screwed up here. How can i measure the depth of a tire tread by timing it." Her instructor told her "the tire tread had to be 3/32 deep". She took that as 3 30 seconds and ask the guy "what would bee wrong with a minute and a half?" Her instructor chuckled and told her to "ask your husband".
