On the plus-side, the neighbor kid brought over his bulldozer and leveled everything across the 18 acres of field but the hole in which I caught the last two- dad going into his hole, and mom coming out. I laid them out in the field side by side. Another cool benefit is what a cursory check will and has revealed- that one leveled hole I thought was clean was actually not, as it has a fresh hole and a small pile of loose rubble, and now a fresh trap. I can't begin to say how pleased I am with this whole process, because of how alarming it can be to drop a tractor tire into an unseen groundhog 'excavation', (beside the risk to the tractor, or it's operator, if it happens on the downhill wheel on a serious slope). I made it worth the lad's while.

When in high-school and college I lusted for this airplane:



When I graduated from college my roommate and I decided enlistment was the way to go. He got in. The recruiter advised me (a) the right knee was too far gone to ever pass the physical for the Navy, and (b) at six-foot-four I was too tall to fly Skyhawks anyway. Dreams of tooling around in "Heinemann's Hot-Rod" were dashed.

My roommate went on to discover he had a horrendous habit of getting air-sick, and instead did twenty-five very successful years in Naval Intelligence.

I became a bean-counter...whatever...

You have good taste: the Skyhawk was just a pretty airplane, a nice rather delicate prim looking thing in a sea of Thumpers, Phantoms, and other big heavy (albeit very capable) contemporaries.

It was a bit whistful when they were on the wrong side of the Falklands War...

Well, that might require the convergence of 2 impossibilities - I'd have to shave off my beard and I 'd have to get a phone that could take & transfer photos. I'm saving the 1st for when I want to fall off the grid and go incognito and I'm too cheap to actually even own a phone....

Agreed, Sarge, the Sea Harriers and their Sidewinders made hash of the Argie Skyhawks, Mirages and Daggers. Besides the maneuverability of the Harriers and their tech, I seem to recall the Argies had a considerable disadvantage of the Falklands being at the extreme limits of their operating range...they only had a few minutes over the combat zone before they had to high-tail it back to base or risk running out of fuel. Still, the Brits racked up a score similar to Dirt's varmint-hunting...twenty aircraft shot down in air-to-air action without loss to themselves. That was an amazing campaign in aggregate...a true test of intestinal fortitude by a country at the limits of its diminished resources.

If one can believe the newspapers, it would seem the UK is teetering on further decline, what with the growing demographic issues and the Scots throwing the furniture around. My English friends don't seem to be overly concerned, although they live/work in London, which appears to be an island of prosperity in a sea of despair.

If the Args were at a disadvantage, it was offset to a very great degree because of two things. First was a limit in the number of Harriers on the two carriers compared to the Args entire airforce. Luckily the Args were too stupid to actually concentrate rather than piecemeal their force. Second and most important the Args went back to real bases, so their logistics was a simplified problem. The RN task force was limited in stores to what was on hand aboard ship.

Many seem to forget that the Args might have been a couple hundred miles to home, but the RN was thousands of miles from home.

The perspective is quite different, but the noise level right now is very high what with a General Election coming to a climax. One has to love the idea of a general election being only 6 weeks long, no PACs, and no incumbents.
