It's been quite a while since I was up that way, but as I recall RT 641 over the mountain is some pretty spectacular scenery, particularly in the Fall. A lot of neat little "burgs" thereabouts, Amberson and Dry Run are a couple that come to mind. Unfortunately, after 20 odd years, the layout of things is pretty much of a jumble in my memory.

641 intersecting at 75 in Spring Run in one direction takes you over to 522 and then up to Rockhill Furnace to the East Broad Top and the Rockhill Trolley Museum. 641 in the other direction takes you over to Roxbury, Chambersburg or Shippensburg, etc. I go over that route at least once a year as it is some very pretty scenery and a fun drive.

I like the drive up over from the Cumberland county side. Have traveled a bit of 75 (also years back) going east and ending up in Mifflintown, as best I recall. A few years ago coming back east from Ohio on the Pike (trying to get to over to Chambersburg) got off one exit too far west (whoops!) and did some "touring" on 75

I enjoy old photos like those because they help me further appreciate a time in American history when we moved from a largely agrarian lifestyle to an industrial one, which to me seemed a time when we depended on a lot of muscle, iron, steam , and iron-will to get things done and invent a whole new - modern - society. To me, that last scene epitomizes all of that. Look at the lay-of-the-land with the railroad cutting its purpose through it.

We have not far away some of the older buildings in Georgia. The tourist business is very important to Savannah.
Persons from the north visit this area and heap praise on the old buildings and stuff.
My son lived in the Poughkeepsie, NY area until recently and moved to the little town In which I live after he retired.
We used to visit him when he lived in New York. I was always amazed that the local people seemed to have little
interest in local history and the old buildings in the area many which were older than any in Savannah that get high
praise from those that do not see their own areas beauty.
Many old buildings in Savannah have been saved through the efforts of the Savannah College of Art and Design but
this has resentment because SCAD does not pay taxes on educational buildings. They were, in most cases, going to
be razed.Of course much of this involves local politics into which I won't go.
I do realize that not everything can be saved and committees are probably the hardest way do do anything but it
really hurts to see old stuff go. Even in Pembroke, where I live that is only 115 years old, there is stuff worth saving.
We are lucky that the novelty of the camera saved so much for us to see now.

Beyond that overarching aspect and their preservation of a visual record of a frame in history and time, I also find the ones that I have been posting particularly of interest as I have connections to the area and also find them of some use in my modeling activities.

I really do wish that this card had more information regarding location and activity. Now I have to be on the lookout for other pictures of this scene; maybe one that captures the small engine and dump cars. Probably one of the better cards depicting these and now gives me an option to include such items on the layout were I so inclined.
