Cover of Deep Purple "Highway Star" off the Machine Head album that has Smoke on the Water on it? Joe Satriani on guitar?

Rather listen to Richie Blackmore with Deep Purple, but this at least beats the pabulum that the record companies are pushing.

Pete, Sadly the "Rants & Raves" thread was killed by Bill quite a while ago.

Jon, it wasn't from "rants and raves". It was it's own thread, and couldn't have been far into the second page when all but the first page were deleted. I just thought the article, quoted above, belonged. 'Fighting ISIS' is not 'fighting Islam'. And Muslims and Arabs taking the lead on ISIS, and it's message, makes it all perfectly clear, and from the inside.

Chickenhead is obviously screaming in order to be heard over the band. Unfortunately, he loses all semblance of melody in doing so.

Pete, I knew what you were referring to. I fear this current administration more then I fear a bunch of terrorists. The tactics that the administration is using to try to take away the 2nd Ammendment Rights of law abiding citizens should worry any citizen.

Well, just to be perfectly clear, I wasn't talking about either Obama or the Democrats or the 2nd Amendment at all, and I'm not sure how things veered in that direction, although the bottle of Porter may have had something to do with it. :D

But I agree that there's little that will make ISIS irrelevant faster than an outcry from the majority of the Muslim/Islamic world that ISIS are a bunch of whack-jobs who don't speak for the Islamic world whatsoever, and that the Muslim world takes the military lead in making them go away.
If the Christian world takes the lead, terrorist recruitment goes through the roof.

Of course, if they invade the U.S., we're all gonna wish we listened to Jon.
And they'll be GD sorry if they ever step foot into Mississippi.

Your point was good & clear, and one that many would do well to understand.

Well, just to be perfectly clear, the point was the Queen of Jordan's. No credit to me. I just thought she was spot-on.

Ballsy move on her part. And a woman, no less, in that patriarchal society.

The daughter and I took a drive out into the country today. It's around forty-six degrees and a stiff wind out of the west, but the sun occasionally peeks through.

We headed west to the edge of the county and Keysville, site of Terra Rubra Farm, birthplace of Francis Scott Key:

The farm is looking pretty good...it had fallen into rough shape in recent years but it looks like whoever owns it now has put things right.

Turning northwest we crossed the mighty Monocacy River, swollen with rain and melting snow:

Image

The Monocacy forms part of the border between Carroll and Frederick counties, eventually emptying into the Potomac at Point-of-Rocks, site of the longest viaduct on the old C&O canal.

We eventually found our way to the edge of the field at Gettysburg. Stopped at Little Round Top:

Looking west from Little Round Top toward Catoctin. You can see the ski slopes of Liberty at Fairfield (I believe one of Sarge's old stompin' grounds). The rock out-cropping in the center of the valley below is Devil's Den, and just to the left of that would be the Slaughter Pen. Behind Devil's Den, just behind and to the right of the trees, would be the Wheatfield. The Confederate advance/attack on day 2 would have been along the left as they headed for Big Round Top in an effort to turn the Union line anchored on Little Round Top.

A hundred yards or so behind on the southwestern slope of Little Round Top is one of the most sacred places of the war. Chamberlain's 20th Maine was the last regiment in the line and took the full force of the Alabama boys when they came up-slope to try and roll up the Union position. Nearly out of ammunition he ordered a down-hill bayonet charge that broke the attack and saved Meade for another day.

This is a humbling place:

I have never come here and seen the monument untended. People leave flowers, letters, old photographs...it is a special place.

Hope you guys had a great weekend.

Healy, it looks like the NPS is following through on their promises to restore the Battlefield to the way it was in 1863. Last I was there, ('99) you could only see part of the rocks of the "Den" from Little Round Top. Appears they've cleared a lot of trees and underbrush growth. I've gotta get back out there!

Mitch, they've done alot of work. They are following through on their promise to get the field back into 1863 order, to the extreme. A few years back they cut down all of the trees in the Peach Orchard and replanted a few yards away. As you pointed out they've removed much of the trees and cover from the valley in front of LRT. The biggest change is a new visitor's center was built at the southern end behind Culp's Hill (by a foundation, not the NPS), and they tore down the old Cyclorama building on the northern end of Cemetery Ridge. Tearing that down was a huge fight...the building was pretty unique and a number of preservation groups tried to step in and save it...seems kind of @ss-backwards. Lots of changes as well to the open ground between Seminary and Cemetery Ridges. Try to get down...things look alot different.

Healey,

What did they do with the Cyclorama painting?
Destroying the building was bad enough.
I hope the painting was saved.
