Pete, If you're looking to purchase a semi-auto I would recommend a 9MM. It's a good home defense round and your wife will be able to control firing it. If you're looking at a wheel gun, I would go with something in .38 cal. If you haven't already, a good gun safety course with some range training would be time well spent.
