More "3rd Ave EL" -- from me

Note: I used the 3rd Ave. EL downtown and uptown E. 59th Street EL station countless times with my mother who shopped with me at Bloomingdales - which even in the 1940's-50's-60's was considered an upscale major department store. We took the El a few stops down from our station and then back uptown to it to get home. SO I remember that scene quite well !

I have never understood the concept or belief that the lack of replies equates to actual interest or people looking at stuff.....nobody at all replied to my last trolley posting.

I look in regularly. If I have something to post, I do.

No worries, Joe...the concept of elevated lines has always interested me.

Was it general practice for trolley lines to run beneath the elevated railroads? I wonder if Fred's place did a brisk business...

Edit :: Turns out Fred's joint has quite a history. The restaurant is located at the intersection of State and Van Buren Streets. Here's a pic of a few of Fred's patrons the day they overturned prohibition:

Healey -- Thanks - great photos -- Indeed it is State St and Van Buren - and I believe I have a view from the same location but looking across the street -- I will look for it and post it here. This may be it -- the photo in my CTA collection I found :

Some of the the guys in the restaurant-bar look like, heh, mobsters -- the guy on the right vaguely like Al Capone. Of course, he would not be happy that Booze prohib ended !

YES -- It WAS a practice on most streets with El lines to have streetcar lines below them --- some of those streetcar lines preceded some of the EL's built above them -- at least in Philadelphia & NY City
