I know. A GMO pineapple. They block the beta carotene from turning the lycopene yellow. allowing it to stay pink. Same taste different color. For $15.00. they'll rot in the store.

Been under development for 15 years, just got FDA approval (necessary as it is a GMO food). They got the plant to produce lower levels of the enzyme that normally converts lycopene (stuff that makes tomatoes red) to beta carotene (stuff that makes non GMO pineapples yellow). Lycopene is "sweeter" than beta carotene so the pineapple is sweeter. They are only being grown in Costa Rica and are in much shorter supply hence the price difference.
Regular pineapple used to be pretty expensive 50-60 years ago. I think they went for $5 when I was a kid. We mostly got canned pineapple back then.
