New Haven GE diesel DEY-2 1936

Postby Carey Williams » Mon Aug 05, 2024 3:11 pm

Hello all

1936 the New Haven Railroad embraced the diesel locomotive by ordering 10 DEY-2 from General Electric with 660 HP engines by Cooper Bessemer . Limited to yard use with 20 mph top end.
Scratch built O scale brass model running with outside third rail pulling Helium cars by Hawk 1938-42.
From the less than stylish lines of the GE loco it's easy to see why this was not a popular engine to model.

Thanks to Jim & Pete for finding and selling me the little diesel.
Great sounds as the engine rolls down the rails .

Someone wanted a model of it, or they would not have worked hard to design and build an accurate model.

What is that noise? It sounds like u-joints going clunk-clunk-clunk. I like the model but the noise would have to go.
The manual reverse is a clue that it has a universal motor. I would add diodes to allow reversing track polarity to control direction.

Looking at your collection of things, Carey, I suspect you find it most desirable with no changes to the design, clunk-clumk-clunk. :D

Glad to see it run Carey. I have to admit I like the "chunk-a-chunk" burble of the drive, though per Wayne's comments it might mean the mechanism isn't long for this world. I got it from Norm at the March meet(2019?) Jim passed on it due to the third rail set-up, we both agreed at the time that you're collection is the natural destination for all things like this, again gratified to see it get it's own video on your channel.
Thanks for posting.
