Been a good day for a 'bo.
I wuz makin my way back across the tracks ta hunker down 'hind the trestles south o Clemente. I wuz feeling poorly an kinda sarry fer m'self when I run inta this fine gentleman. Out there, plain as day, watchin the trains go by in a dandy tux. Sez he got his start on tha Philadelphia & Reading and tha coal trade, made his money, and doan havta do thet any more. Wall, we watched tha trains fer a while tagather and din say too much. Then he tips hes hat, and sez Merry Christmas! He git's inta a fancy dancy car wit a fancy redhead, some fancy kids, and a fancy hound and heads down tha road, probly goan to tha fancy dancy hotel del.
I looks down at my dogs an there on tha ballast is this fine tin cup sez Erie on it. Next to it's sum fresh anthracite free fer the takin', right there.
So I got me a gud cup an a warm glow frum the coals an sum Sauza I been hoardin and got ta thinkin I hope thet fella an hes loved ones have a Merry Christmas s'well.

And, yes, D, that's me going vertical down the face. The particular picture is from the San Diego UT files and about five years old on another big day. I was out yesterday doing the same thing, but only lasted about 40 minutes before I realized I was thresholding on energy and paddled back in before making a problem for myself or anyone else.
It's a workout to paddle and punch out in big surf. But each time you do it, and each time you catch one of those, it's like a hobo thing... the ultimate free ride. I have heard that there are Melvins who use a buddy with a wave runner and a tow rope to pull them out, but that just isn't done here. Melvin, BTW, has become a local substitute term for a hodad. I had to leave the man with a legacy. His type don't get the Bettys.

Yes, isn't the tree truly beautiful? It's my first since I left home and I can't even tell you how much I love sitting by it at night, it just glows peace.
SAN! That's amazing you dude you, what a chunderous wave. To think a hobo can ride like that after drinking fermented mash is totally bitchin'. I'm having a cup of nog early today, so I'll raise one to you with my own tin cup. " Are you drinking the water or the wave?" Ah so!

And especially to J*N and Pete, I can't tell you how sweet you two are, I about died when I saw your presents for me in the mail, all wrapped up special. Thank you thank you for being so thoughtful and sweet, it's just killing me seeing them there under that tree.
And an extra-special nog raise to Tramp for getting me such a truly wonderful tree.

San, all these guys SAY they surf. You surf, buddy, you surf. A friend of mine, Don Bishop, still surfs out there, but he's way north of you so you wouldn't know him. San, by wood beams do you mean casements?
Too bad the true colors of the tree don't show. Many of the ornaments are from the fifties and have unusual pink, magenta, and violet tones that I don't see any longer. I'll try to get D to shoot the thing with the candles lit.
Merry Christmas to all hobos everywhere. We should have a toast with our tin mugs tomorrow night.

Pete and Kim this was a complete surprise!!!!! What a terrific and thoughtful gift!!!! My own offical NYC tin cup with a couple chunks of genuine Pennsy anthracite coal!!!!!!
