Exactly, And with the mill(s) gone, everything else seemed to disappear as well.

And thus the danger of a 1 dimensional economy is revealed - 1 basket of eggs.......

"Filtered gas - Polarine" used for ( ? I cannot imagine; thus, it would not make it into a model's precincts.)

Polarine was a brand name of Standard Oil lubricating oil.
I remember when some gasolines advertised that they were filtered.
It was mainly to remeove dirt that would foul the fuel system.

Thanks, Roger, and your information makes me wonder all the further. I still don't get the concept. The placement of the device a particular distance from the building seems deliberate since this is the second time seeing such, which we saw in the previous photo of the like, and makes me more curious. Perhaps, that's the prototype for gas stations, before the world figured that concept out? Did an attendant come rushing out to operate the pump? Or were customers on the honor system to remove fuel and then go inside to pay?

Yes. The world is still working on this - why I need to watch TV while pumpling gas for example is a mystery to me other than a creation by a marketing department

Possibly, although the rushing part seems unlikely - perhaps sauntering or meandering or trundling...

Also possible - within the past decade there were many locations in PA where I bought gas that still worked on the honor system.

I'll bet they were cured of that notion quickly .

Only recently for the one......and sadly so since that heralds the influx of the dishonorable and passage of what had been a time of basic honesty. Next time I am in that particular area I will look on the one station.

There is another nearer my place in PA that by the time you get out of the car and walk around to unscrew the cap from the tank, there's a person standing there asking what grade and how much you want today.

There remain outposts of civilized behavior, polite discourse, and honest customer service. I fear that that will all be gone in the very near future.

That Blue Mt. Station says a lot to me, You see, I have often marveled when I saw a model train layout that had a station perched on a hillside like that without a single other building anywhere in sight. No town. No suburb. No rural village. Not even a farmhouse. So I would wonder, who is the hobbyists saying the station is for? Passengers just disembark and look around, period?

However, I can spy in that photo something of a community in the distance at the top of the hill above the station. Nice. I live and learn. Yup.

This was a stop at Pen Mar -- ......the Blue Mountain House, perhaps Pen Mar's most famous hostelry. Built in 1882 of Georgia pine at a cost of $250,000, the Blue Mountain was a 300-room Victorian confection that burned to the ground in a spectacular summertime fire in 1913 with no loss of life.

Guess that is another reminder of how our tastes in vacation/recreation have changed
over the past years. My in-laws have a small business of rental cottages on
Lake Winnepesaukee in New Hampshire that they purchased from the original
owner in the mid-1950's. A lot of their clientele are repeat customers whose families
have been coming there for many, many years. As the original clientele ages and
dies off, their children don't come as often, seemingly preferring resort vacations
where "more is happening" than sitting lakeside, boating, waterskiing, etc. I often
wonder how much longer they will be able to carry on before they join the ranks
of former resort-owners who have caved in to the large property owners who
put up megamansions and restrict public access to the lake. Small resorts are
definitely more personal, and more individualized. Have we lost our ability to
just sit and relax, and unwind?

The resort areas that were (maybe still are?) near to larger cities were dotted with
many small resort hotels, as well as larger ones. Seems that they have all been
done in by the chain motels, or are at least having a difficult time of carrying on.
You don't need a resort-destination style hotel, with headliners performing nightly, and
a casino to ensure that you leave money in the resort, to enjoy a vacation, or do you?
Take care,
Wolfgang
