Re: Hobo Jungle
Thank you, Wayne. I had a feeling we'd get the best succinct perspective on Halloween from your good offices. Bless you for your excellent mind and convivial spirit. Murph

Why it continues is open to speculation - celebrating candy and partying in costume would seem the current motivation.....perhaps a final "fling" before Winter arrives with all that it brings to our doors
Winter is coming.
Evil cannot create anything new, it can only corrupt and ruin what good forces have created or made.

That last fling before winter always seemed to be the reason to me.
Ghosts, goblins, witches, etc. just made it more interesting.

OK, fortunately I do not have photographs of these macabre milestones from my former partying life, but (geeze, I wish I hadn't decided to confess this, BUT...) three characters I went as and still taught high school doing so , over several years, were(hold on to yours butts):
KISS / KIZZ, one of the band members. You can theorize for yourselves which one of the four.
Sly Stone
and...(oivey......)...
Mrs. Doubtfire
(My wife helped me strap myself into that get-up. I was especially amused during the drive from home to school that day. At a traffic light, another driver actually made-eyes at me. At least , I think that's what he was doing.)
True stories all.

Especially if they lived through the early 1960s to the mid-1970s. During those psychedelic years major food companies even fed us things like Crazy Cow cereal.

Yes. It's to confuse our kids. 364 days a year we tell them not to take candy from strangers. Then one cold dark night we allow them to take as much as they can carry. Go ahead dear take a piece from that man with a bloody knife stuck in his head. It's ok.
My wife and i took our daughter out for her first Halloween. Early in the night we joined a group of parents with some kids her age (3 years old) The kids all raced to be the first to ring the door bell. My wife with camera in hand waited for our kid to get her first piece of free candy. Even the home owner was happy to be in the photo. so my wife took several. Thanks were said the door closed and off we went. Wait one kid is missing. I knock on the door again and out comes the witch. "have you seen my daughter." No "replies the witch. I tell her "she never came out" just then my daughter runs through the lady's living room shouting a kitty a kitty. My little monster had slipped by everybody to chase that little kitten.
