Re: Hobo Jungle
No fun British Car Week here. The rain let up a bit this morning...I was able to pick up another five hundred or so bricks before it started again:

Maybe another five hundred to go, than on to Phase-II. Hat's off to the missus who gave me a hand this morning.

Re: Hobo Jungle
This drawing is an attempt at a visual short story. Can any of you hobos figure out what has happened, what it means? Dirt might have an advantage here, but no issue.

Regarding the continuous line, you are on the shoulders.
Your taciturn eyes show the expression of a bad news, something irrevocable.
The night they drove old Dixie down maybe.

pulled over hearing Patsy Cline on the radio singing "Walking After Midnight", remembering the little filly he left standing at the bar a few miles back...
Re: Hobo Jungle
What Sarge said. Looks like a dead battery, windshield wiper stopped in mid stroke.

Nah, those eyes are not for a dead battery.

I'm with Andre...those are the eyes of regret. He's looking back ten years wishin' he'd done things a bit different, but now, with the news he's just gotten, he realizes can't undo the mistakes he made...
Re: Hobo Jungle
Rain makes corn and corn makes whiskey. It's the first rain storm in 40 days. IOWA has been stuck in a dry spell and the bank wants their mortgage payment. Without a good corn crop that farm boy will need to enlist to make a living. That rain just erased his fears of a year long rice and bamboo diet.
I spend entirely too many hours a day tying my shoes
Re: Hobo Jungle
Sheesh, guys, fascinating commentary! Truly poetical. I can do no better, though I would agree a woman is involved.
I do recognize the driver.
Once again, the artist is a master of glass and metal. Look at the chrome door handles, and the back of the mirror, the transition from wet to dry windshield, the look in the eye revealing the churning in his thoughts, the hands! A master at his craft.

Re: Hobo Jungle
Looks to me like the beginnings of a smile forming. The driver is probably happy he is driving a car with an actual wing window and drip edges rather than some modern day piece of crap without either!

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. This one speaks volumes! Very nice work Tramp.

Re: Hobo Jungle
Enjoying your thoughts. Thanks! I drew myself using a mirror, no photos. This made it very difficult to draw my right hand since I'm right handed. Also, because my eyes are not looking at the viewer, I had to use two mirrors for those parts of my face. I removed parts of my car to draw them, yet I invented the landscape. I basically invented the rain as well, designing the drops as I went along. The drawing is 50 inches wide, pencil on paper, 1994. When you want me to tell what I intended, just ask.
Sarge, I've had 5 60s Chevrolets and never had an electrical problem. Drove my 64,65, and 66 Impalas over 100k miles without any real problems, although my 65 with the 396 needed valves at 155k.
The idea behind the piece is that I've suddenly shut off the car in the breakdown lane, which is the only way the wiper could be in that position. In a sense, I am at an emotional crossroads in my life, examining my past and future, which I was at that time (1994). The way the rain is dripping, looking almost like tears, is me making fun of myself for being melodramatic, just as I've drawn the eyes sad but my mouth with a slight wry smile (the Mona Lisa trick). At that point in my career, although I had painted and drawn for 25 years since I was 13, I had not been able to land a one-man show of my work. I had been turned down by everyone, even the Atrium Gallery in Lewiston (a hallway in a tiny community college). Then, a few years later, I finally had my first show in SoHo, which nearly sold out, allowing me to move to Belfast. I was almost 40 years old.
