Wiglaf (Hev) is a character in the Anglo-Saxon epic poem Beowulf. He is the son of Weohstan, a Swede of the Wægmunding clan who had entered the service of Beowulf, king of the Geats. Wiglaf is called Scylfing as a metonymy for Swede, as the Scylfings were the ruling Swedish clan. While in the service of the Scylfing Onela, king of the Swedes, Weohstan killed the rebel prince Eanmund and took his sword as a trophy;[1] Wiglaf later inherited it.[2] Weohstan belonged to the clan of the Wægmundings, the same clan that Beowulf's father Ecgþeow belonged to; so Wiglaf is a distant cousin of Beowulf, and at the time of Beowulf's death he was Beowulf's only living relative.

"Scholars agree that when Beowulf was originally written, it was a distinctly pagan document later embroidered with Christian symbolism by the monks responsible for its duplication. Screenwriters Gaiman and Avery have actually taken the spiritual imagery even further, heightening Christianity's clash with the pagan Norse religions and orienting a plot that is shot through with biblical imagery.
At the very heart of this new Beowulf is the theme of sin and consequence. The film reveals that the temptations we give into, however small, harmless or pleasurable they may seem, often return when we least expect them, rabid and famished for blood. In Beowulf, one character's sin, which appears as little more than a miniscule indiscretion, quite literally grows into a destructive force beyond human comprehension. The sins of the father are not just visited on the son, but on all those unlucky enough to be near the transgressor. "We men are the monsters now," Beowulf tells his best friend and comrade in arms, Wiglaf"

Man, and to think I had a lot of trouble following that movie where Mel Gibson lost his head in the battles of the Irish clans. Way too deep for me. I'll just watch El Dorado with John Wayne for the 300th time.

Very interesting Jon. When I was forced to read Beowulf, the teacher never went into it that deep. Too bad, as I have more interest today.
Did you know that it is a long-standing controversy whether the Goths were Geats. Both Old Icelandic and Old English literary sources clearly separate the Geats on one hand from the Goths; on the other, however, the Gothic historian Jordanes wrote that the Goths came from the island of Scandza. Moreover, he described that on this island there were three tribes called the Gautigoths, the Ostrogoths and Vagoths - this implies that the Geats were Goths rather than vice versa.

Springtime in western Pa, some of the buds are just comin' out, and already it's tick season. Fawkers are everywhere. Night b'for last, the cat had one in his lip, the big Dane had one stuck in his neck, and last night my son had one in his armpit and found another one in his hair. I'm gonna have to get something and spray the whole damned yard. 15 years ago, ticks were almost unheard of here, now they are a menace.
