BTW, Rich asked about a sign-up link. It already is on every page at the top, labelled "register", right next to "log-in". Couldn't be more obvious.

That's the problem.....the link doesn't work. Due to the fact the forum gets hundreds of attempts to join (by bots) each week, sorting through them is a monumental task. The old software doesn't support any kind of protection, like even asking to confirm if they are human. New software with updated security would allow the vetting process for "real " new members to be infinitely easier. We have to keep in mind that Lee and his wife are continuing the forum in the memory of Bill......neither, to my knowledge, are modelers. It is a labor of love.

Thank you Wayne. For whatever reason I didn't know this was possible. It would solve a major problem I have for posting photos.

Can you explain how to do it one more time. I'm not a computer guru be any stretch and that's why I would like to post photos directly from my computer and not a host site................but being able to post directly from my I-phone would be great!

Butch, in this you are correct, but although that is a security thing and needs addressed, it has no bearing on the issue I've been trying to raise.

Likewise, the photo posting thing is largely untrue. It's as easy as noticing the "attachments" tab under the box you type in to write a post, hitting that tab, and following the prompts. If anything, server capacity or setting the server to dump the oldest data periodically would solve the issue of the photo cache filling up.

What I have been trying to get across is this. The notion these things solved by investment in software would bring new members flocking in and save the forum is, not just in my opinion, kidding yourselves.

If the (unsolicited) emails I've been getting on this subject during this thread and the last where we talked of such things are any valid indication, the following is true.

1) The environment created by the current membership of the forum in general is considered toxic and unwelcoming.
2) Anyone can read this forum in its entirety and everything that is said here is on public record.
3) The 2-rail subforum is not perceived as somehow an innocent portion separate of the whole. Neither is any other sub-forum. MTJ's reputation is based on the whole. One of many versions of this point emailed me covers the outside perception, "As long as the Crapper-car Lounge constitutes more posts than all the modeling [sub-]forums combined, its clear what the main purpose is and that it ain't trains. I want nothing to do with it."
4) "No-one models on the 2-rail forum", "old collectors", "doorstops only club", "grumpy old white men", is the perception. I also admit being asked more than once, "Why are you even trying?"

As far as people voluntarily joining something, perceptions are everything.

Based on the above,

1) If the current active membership want to continue business as usual as an insular little sanctuary for yourselves and Lee is good with footing the cost of new software, be honest with yourselves and with Lee that that is your purpose. It's fine, but don't expect a flock of folks who want to join up. You're kidding yourself.

2) If you want to increase the membership and increase the breadth of submissions beyond doorstops and boxes in closets, the owner and the current active membership need to agree to a reboot of this thing such that the forum as a whole is a welcoming and civilised place to share the hobby, or they ain't comin'.

3) More than one email suggests actually flushing the entire thing (when the new software is brought up on line is as good a time as any) and starting over with a new sub-forum structure that does not include "Clubcar" and does include some sort of mutually agreed upon recourse for behavioural excesses, a recourse that is light-handed, fair, and balanced, "neither the anarchy of MTJ or the stifling autocracy of NK". "Make it a train forum and I'll consider it" appears more than once.

So, you guys who are the active membership (and the last men standing) and Lee as the owner can decide the direction you want to go and how you want to do it. I know what conditions need met before I would consider posting here again, those who have contacted me during these last exchanges know that for themselves too. I'm sure the O Scale and 3-rail communities at large do as well.

I can't send the message in clearer language than that, so I'll stop here and let you guys and Lee figure out your future for yourselves. The rest of us will watch and make our decisions for ourselves based on what that future holds.

This is a test.

Yep. Sarge is correct - this works! I sort of remember it working in the past, then our photo banks filled up and we could no longer do it. I did the above from my big Dell computer - not an iPhone device.

As long as this works, the only real issue is getting the ability to sign in. I am mis-interpreting Sarge, of course, but I can always disagree with my misinterpretation: I just do not believe folks are staying away from this section of MTJ because of what is going on in the Club Car. In order to do that, they would have to be visiting the Club Car, then going away in disgust, then visiting again. In my opinion, we do not need folks like that.

They do spill over here once in a while - again in response to some liberal comment I may make - but if ignored, they go back to the Club Car.

Let's open up membership, and see if Sarge is right - that folks stay away from here because of the vitriol in another forum.

Well Sarge, I agree with your major points or broad strokes, like most problems it's not simple or easy and will take steps, but I know we have to start somewhere if we want any forward progress.

I hope new software "dumps" what has been archived as it gives us a clean slate. And, it will be a gage of activity and participation. I hear from members offline as well, and I get the opposite feeling from them. So, if we can just agree to disagree, maybe we will all have a better place to come to discuss model railroading in the near future.

The only section where I see saw real issues was the club car and I hope it is dumped as well. It has nothing to do with modeling. I see differences of opinions from time to time in the modeling sections, but for the most part it is civil.

Butch and Bob:

Fair enough.

We'll see what happens with it.

This is a test.

This image has been posted using only my iPhone from beginning to end. Same process as used with the other.

That should get you there, Butch.

Well, this would be great to post directly from my I-Phone. I just need to learn how. Instead of sending the photos from my phone to my computer, I can just send them to MTJ...........is that correct?

Not sure how Sarge is doing it but I’d start here

https://imgbb.com/

Touch start uploading and then choose a pic from the source, touch upload and once it’s uploaded I select bbc full link then copy.

Paste it directly on your posting page and then post it and the pic should be there

Even though I usually use the host you recommend, Greg, the experiment uses the MTJ server. Butch, this should get you going.

1) Below the dialogue box you type your messages in, you'll see a couple tabs, one of which says "attachments".

2) Hit that one, then hit "add files".

3) Pick your choice from the options in the pop-up box. In this case "Photo Library". Pick the image or images you want from your photo library.

4) When the status column shows a green checkmark, tap "place inline" for each image.

That places your images on MTJ's server and displays them in your posting. phpBB's forum software really is very intuitive and user friendly. I can go through this using iPhone, iPad, and a MacOS laptop. I've done the same with Windows based machines as well, and can't imagine you can't with Android; all this is in phpBB's software.

The limits MTJ has hit in the past are not software limitations, but capacity limits on their server's allocation for photo hosting. That gets solved by a larger available cache or by setting the cache to purge the oldest data once full, most often by literally "pushing" old data off the bottom of the stack as new data is added to the top.

Does that get you there, Butch?

Butch, go with Sarges method. Much easier. Thanks Sarge, I had no idea it could be done that way. Very easy.

This is crazy simple. Took this right off my desk top not my phone. Does that open my computer up to hacking.
