The porch roof is kinda strange. The gable roof atop the shed roof serves no purpose, (as it is not vented that we can see), so it must be just for aesthetic reasons. Still, adding two valleys and a gable cap that could be a leak source seems to show they maybe had a few extra bucks and decided to spend it. :)

Roof cricket to divert the rain off the steps is what I thought it's purpose might be...

True. I was thinking that the sanctuary is upstairs and the Sunday School classrooms/meeting rooms, offices, social hall (if they had one) are on the first floor.
