Netherlands suspend use of AstraZeneca vaccine
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-56397157

The Netherlands has become the latest country to suspend use of the Oxford-AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine over concerns about possible side effects.

The Dutch government said the move, which will last until at least 29 March, was a precaution.

The Republic of Ireland earlier made a similar decision over reports of blood clotting events in adults in Norway.

But the World Health Organisation says there is no link between the jab and an increased risk of developing a clot.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) - who is currently carrying out a review into incidents of blood clots - says the vaccine's benefits continue to outweigh its risks.

I'm eligible, so what, I'm not willing to drive 60 miles and stand all day out in the cold to get a shot. Were recalling the governor because of this.

I guess you want to be coddled and have door to door service? Boo-hoo......

My 84 year old Mil did the drive and got her 1st shot and is scheduled for her 2nd.

Any, since you never thought it was real, why do you need a vaccine?

Lot of problems with the vaccine roll out. Many places don't allow you to make an appointment. Philadelphia's suburbs are fighting for more doses. Philadelphia will start today to vaccinate restaurant workers. while the suburbs struggle to vaccinate the elderly. Philly has moved to group 2b. while the rest of the state remains in 1a.

The states really are not set up for this on a grand scale. No thought or planning was put into this a year ago, or maybe years ago.

The web sites are a mess, are not up to handling the volume, and convoluted to navigate. Young kids are helping the elderly sign up. My wife spent a week on line to get her mother an appointment.

That seems to work well. I can tell you that navigating the state's DMV site to get a license renewal appointment was absolutely maddening.

I cannot imaging what it might be like for someone with minimal computer/keyboard skills.

I finally snagged one 2 hours away and felt lucky.

Why Europe's AstraZeneca vaccine fumble could be bad news for the U.S.
https://news.yahoo.com/why-europes-astr ... 20186.html

Forget herd immunity. In Europe this week it appeared “herd mentality” was the dominating force in the battle against COVID-19.

On Monday, Germany raised a red flag, temporarily suspending use of the AstraZeneca vaccine so that it could investigate possible links to blood clots after seven cases of thrombosis occurred in the 1.6 million patients inoculated with that vaccine in Germany; three cases proved fatal. In response, another dozen European countries marched behind Berlin, dropping that vaccine to further investigate and effectively halting already anemic COVID immunization programs.

To date, less than 5 percent of citizens in Europe have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19, compared to 13 percent in the U.S. Hampered by a shortage of doses, “the vaccine rollout in Europe appears more like a crawl-out,” Roland Freudenstein, policy director of Martens Centre, a Brussels-based think tank, told Yahoo News. He says the United States, where 23 percent of citizens have had at least one shot, appears in contrast to be “a glowing example” of how the COVID crisis can be rapidly turned around. Halting the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine further muddied the waters for some Americans, a surprising number of whom have ambivalent feelings about being inoculated.

Moderna to create dual COVID-19, flu vaccine, CEO says
Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel said the jab could be ready for use in a couple of years
https://www.foxnews.com/health/moderna- ... e-ceo-says

Moderna, the maker of the second COVID-19 vaccine to see emergency use approval in the U.S., is now looking to create a dual vaccine against the flu and the novel virus, the company’s chief executive recently said.

Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel said Tuesday that such a jab could be ready for use in a couple of years, though it would be subject to standard regulatory approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), not emergency use as its existing coronavirus vaccine was, he said during The Wall Street Journal Health Forum.

"Today the vaccines we have for seasonal flu are OK in a great year and they are pretty bad in a bad year, in terms of efficacy," he said during the forum, per the Journal. "It is not impossible that in a couple of years we should have the product I just talked about — a high efficacy seasonal flu vaccine and a COVID vaccine — for you at your pharmacy on an annual basis."

For context, the flu vaccine created for the 2019-2020 season was about 45% effective in preventing illness, according to the Centers for Diease Control and Prevention.
