I hope none of you get macular degeneration. It is much more frustrating, at least to me, than the cataracts were. So far there is no cure or fix.

I need lots of light and I do not see any straight lines. They all have curves of some sort. Depth perception is also a problem.

I cut way back on driving after dark several years ago and even after the cataract surgery I still keep that to a minimum.

Agreed. Same thing here in MD. Hard to tell anymore who’s driving with high beams on. Many newer car headlights seem exceptionally bright than in the past.

All sorts of variations out there; seems anything goes is the rule now. Some are way to bright and some seem to have blue or yellow tinge to them. But as long as they are on and all are working I doubt they are going to get pulled over.

It's been a standard feature for several years that the headlights come on when the vehicle is started.

I know GM has automatic headlight control and has had it for years. Excess computer capacity has lead to safety features we don't even think/know about. The interior and exterior lights on my car seem to adjust automatically. I think my current car even has auto headlights on when the wipers are engaged. Pretty sure Chryslers are the same (at least the mini-vans). Don't know about Fords.

What drives me crazy is when drivers over ride this stuff and wind up driving around in the dark with their lights off. Other disconcerting issue is when renting a car on a trip that most imports a) don't have this feature and b) they seem to go out of their way to hide the lighting controls and the release lever to refuel the car.

Re the brightness factor. Idiots that don't turn down the high beam when approaching on coming traffic are idiots, period. At least all of the cars for the last twenty years use sealed headlamp assemblies that require no adjustment. Old school "head lamps" had two sets of screws. One set for holding the bezel that secured the light itself and a different set for adjusting the "aim". I remember a lot of DIY replacement jobs where the owner guessed wrong and had the headlights aiming all over the place, 20 feet up, down and to the right??? A poorly aimed low beam could be just as difficult to deal with as a high beam.

You can buy aftermarket bulbs on eBay and Amazon. 2,3,4, and 5 times brighter than stock. These bulbs don't have have a D.O.T. approved light focus point or light pattern. They will flash blind oncoming drivers. Some will run a brighter fog light also and others just don't give a damn about their high beams.

Well, to change the headlight bulbs in my car you have to be able to take the front fender assemblies off so that's beyond the vast majority of people in this country. Most have trouble understanding which end of a screwdriver is the handle.

That would be me although I do know which end of the screwdriver is the handle. Same story with my wife’s car. I thought I could handle a light bulb change even though I despise mechanical work. Turn the wheel all the way to one side remove the inner fender, blah, blah,blah. Then reach blindly up to the socket with your 80$ light bulb you can’t touch. None for me thanks. The local mechanic did a great job

I could change the headlight bulbs in my prior car..........but just barely. Took some serious contortions, and my hands and wrist just barely could squeeze through the openings to pop out the old bulb and put in the new one. They've made these simple basic owner jobs next to impossible now.

With the LED units you don't have to worry about that. You basically replace the entire headlight assembly. What you have to worry about is the $300-$500 cost associated with this. They usually last longer than the car so it USUALLY only becomes an issue in an accident.

My previous Impala you removed the assembly and then turned the twist lock boot to get to the halogen bulb. I had to find a YouTube video to accomplish this the first time. Once I saw the video it was ridiculously easy. Two stupid plastic clips that I never would have though had anything to do with the headlights and two bolts (those I did find). Tail lights were even more bizarre because all the docs said to remove two thumbscrews diagonally mounted across the assembly. There was actually a third way down under the assembly. Not hard to reach unless you don' know its there. (Another YouTube video to the rescue)

New car has "projection beam" lenses. Hope the bulbs last a real long time!

Once I saw the video it was ridiculously easy.

Thank god for those YouTube videos. That was how I figured out how to change the headlight bulb in my Grand Prix. Took less than 3 minutes to do it

Another video showed what fuse and how to do it when the low beams stopped working. High beams were Okay

This car is one that the headlights are on all the time when the engine is running...
