South African coronavirus variant detected in New York resident
New York has confirmed a case of the South African coronavirus variant in a Nassau County resident.

The case was discovered through sequencing at a city-based commercial lab, and no other details were given in an announcement posted Sunday, such as the patient’s condition, travel history or when the case was confirmed.

Several mutated versions of the virus have caused significant concern among experts because they have shown to diminish vaccine efficacy, including variants first identified in South Africa, B.1.351, and the United Kingdom, B.1.1.7. These strains involve changes along the surface spike proteins that allow the pathogen to bind more tightly to healthy cells.

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes the B.1.351 variant has been reported in 22 cases across ten states, with 44 states reporting over 1,660 cases of the B.1.1.7 strain, which has been projected to become the dominant strain in the U.S. by March.

Several companies are exploring variant booster shots in a bid for more protection against the strains. Both Pfizer and Moderna have said protection against the B.1.351 variant in particular remains unclear. Studies have suggested the variant dropped the Pfizer vaccine's neutralization power by about two-thirds, while Moderna saw a six-fold reduction in neutralizing antibodies.

In the UK where things are pretty much as dire as in the USA (1 in every 700 citizens has died so far, approximately), they've managed to get most of the older individuals vaccinated. Almost all new hospitalizations are amongst middle aged or younger patients. Vaccines are working.

A California program intended to improve COVID-19 vaccine availability to people in hard-hit communities of color is being misused by outsiders who are grabbing appointments reserved for residents of underserved Black and Latino areas.

The program to address inequities in vaccine distribution relies on special access codes that enable people to make appointments on the My Turn vaccine scheduling website. The codes are provided to community organizations to distribute to people in largely Black and Latino communities.

But those codes have also been circulating, in group texts and messages, among the wealthier, work-from-home set in Los Angeles, The Times has learned. Many of those people are not yet eligible for the vaccine under state rules.

Some people able to make appointments have been driving to Cal State Los Angeles to get the shots.

It’s unclear how the codes got into the hands of outsiders, but the situation has forced the state to scramble to protect the integrity of an equity program that Gov. Gavin Newsom and other officials have been hailing. The state canceled appointments made with at least one of the access codes after The Times inquired about it last week.

Second shot was two days ago. Same results.Got shot at 1PM. At 8 PM somebody was hitting my arm with a sledgehammer.
Now two days later I can't bend my arm enough to put on socks because of the pain. Right now I'm more useless than ever.

On the way home from the Covid site, I picked-up my order at a favorite Italian restaurant which has established a big take-out presence, and went home to a big variety Noon meal, with plenty of water, as advised by the clinician who gave me the inoculation , which in my case was as Turkey Hill green tea and Arizona Lemonade.

I ate a lot, comfortably but slowly , and consumed plenty of the liquids. Then, I felt a nap would be beneficial, though I wasn't feeling any differently , but felt the nap would be best.

The nap lasted approximately 2hrs and I awoke feeling steady but a little drained. I decided to cancel some errands I had penciled-in for the afternoon, wanting only to sit inside, enjoying some word puzzles and TV.

I decided to eat a late mini-meal, at approx 9pm, of leftovers from the Italian restaurant entrées, and drank plenty of fluids again. Almost immediately, I felt refreshed and vigorous, back to normal completely .

I offer all this as a reply because I am hoping it may be helpful perspective for anybody , here, still considering getting inoculated .

BTW, when I first drove-up to the large grocerystore parking lot serving the Covid facility, I told the traffic-directing county police officer who came to my car that my appointment was for 11:20, but he said my wait might be as long as 3hrs, which I wasn't sure I'd have had the patience for. In an hour, he came to where he had directed me to park and stay in the car, and said they were less behind, now, so I could go inside and get in line, which I did. Everything was smoothly organized , so I had my shot in approx 15min then sat, as required , for 15min in a specified area, and was then dismissed after telling an aide I felt well. It was altogether easy and comfortable, for which I was totally grateful , not having been certain of what to expect since there was such a sea of cars filling the entire lot, bumper-to-bumper, all waiting for their Covid experience. I'm so very, very glad I insisted on my having patience and seeing the whole thing through.

I relize that I am in a less populated part of the country but had no waiting for either shot.
As reported earlier, I didn't even feel the application of the shots. However, I had the
second one five days ago and have little use of that arm since because of pain from my
shoulder to my wrist. My doctors reaction was the opposite, pain with the first shot and
no pain with the second. If I had had this pain with the first shot I would never have
gotten the second.
