That's why I mentioned it to you. I figured, if anybody could put a value on it, that would be you.

I have been running Apache now for many years; besides being freeware, the thing actually works with no hassles. Upgrades are painless and do what is advertised. The same with Firefox and Thunderbird.
Open Office is also freeware.

What, get stupid? It is a gift I have. You probably don't have the gift or you wouldn't ask how to do it.

No how do you ignore updates? They seem to happen automatically when I turn off the computer.
If the up-dates can't be stopped why bother putting them off for a week or five?

Most of the issues with the updates revolve around serious security patches that MS knows will break about 5% of the systems out there but the severity of the security issue forced release before they could fully debug and account for variations in hardware and drivers. This has been a problem all the way back to XP. In the early days the percentage affected was more like 15 and most users learned about "roll back" procedures when their systems failed to restart after the patch. If you force even a small wait, the patched patch will have been released and you won't have problems with the update. If you wait too long, the patches will have drifted so much that they can't be applied and you will be forced to do a clean install of an updated version of the OS.
