As the literacy rate declines, you’ll ask yourself why the quality of life continues to deteriorate in ways large and small, and in almost every instance the answer will be: because people stopped reading.

They used to just starve; now they've reactivated taking population control to an active mode.

Forgot to give credit...that is the title of a book by P.J. O'Rourke.

Wouldn't it be nice if they gave the same energies to having clean water.

Water is in limited supply in many places and control over it is something that is fought over. Control water and you control people.

Interesting from the BBC

Stop abusing land, scientists warn
https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-49149761

Scientists are to deliver a stark condemnation of the damage being done to the land surface of the planet.

Human activities have led to the degrading of soils, expanded deserts, felled forests, driven out wildlife, and drained peatlands, they will say.

In the process, land has been turned from an asset that combats climate change into a major source of carbon.

The scientists will say this land abuse must be stopped to avoid catastrophic climate heating.

Uncultivated land covered with vegetation protects us from overheating because the plants absorb the warming gas CO2 from the air and fix it in the soil.

But the scientists meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, will say the way we farm and grow timber often actually increases emissions of carbon dioxide.

Between a quarter and a third of all greenhouse gas emissions are now estimated to come from land use.

Got a notice from our local refuse company outlining what is and isn't acceptable for recycling. Most of it makes sense to me, with the exception of plastic motor oil containers. I've always rinsed them out thoroughly with soap and water, then tossed them in the recycling bin...apparently that's not allowed, despite the fact that they are clearly marked on the underside as recyclable. It's going to bug me tossing a five-quart motor oil container in the trash.

Of course I hear a lot of this stuff ultimately goes into the trash anyway, since China, India, and a number of other countries have stopped buying bales of US "recyclables".

The problem was that they were being shipped a lot of trash mixed in with the recyclables. The Philippines just shipped back a boat load of trash to Canada that was supposed to be "recyclables"

One of the items recently announced as forbidden in our paper-products recyclables is pizza boxes. Huh? How do they offend, I wonder. :? Newspapers, magazines, and other paper products are put at the curb in cardboard boxes when one is lucky enough to have them by happenstance on-hand. Yet, a pizza box is a No-no. :|

Murph, the pizza grease contaminates the cardboard, making it unusable for recycling, so I'm told.
