Here is a photo of the chassis from a conventional IMP Atlantic:

Image

As mentioned above it is folded sheet brass though this one has bearings. The axles are not perpendicular to the frame or parallel with each other so the siderods would have prevented the wheels from turning. The wheel centers are brass with set screws to retain them. The brass set screws are at an angle which would cause them to try to unscrew, one side when going forward, the other when in reverse. The axles are brass and the gear and wheel centers are an easy slip fit on them.

It is not a bad looking model though it is very light. When I get a small milling machine I will attempt to carve a replacement chassis out of a piece of brass bar stock.

How about the Reading 0-4-0 camelback done by Gem? Not sure if they fit your time frame, but they are a nice little engine. I see them on the 'Bay' fairly often.

Got one! Fits the time frame just fine although Reading was the competition running into Shippensburg.

Trundles about with a bit of hitch in its giddy-up (think the one axle has a bit of a bend in it...), but it's the only engine I have that can traverse the curve into the one siding, so it's a keeper,

I believe that I have assumed the form of a psychedelic werewolf and am probably hanging out on Haight St.

Not a commonly seen wheel arrangement, but the Reading had such - a 4-4-4 with that Wootten firebox and all those nice spoked wheels, too....
