Murph,

According to Doyle,"Lionel Trains 1900-1942",that catalog is from 1931.
It's older than both of us.

Thanks for the perspective, Roger. My father would have been 17 at that time. I wonder what he was doing w/ a Lionel catalogue at that stage in his life. However, by the time it was 1934, he was married and had a Lionel 1666 and Lionel Scout zipping around a layout.

Murph.
The 1666 came out in 1938.

That sounds better than what I tried to figure out. He'd have been 24 in 1938, and by the time of this photo of him and me (I was born in 1944) he had run trains for a few years. As I've shown you guys before, here I am at 4 or 5 (?) at his layout. Those trains had been his for some time. He died when I was 10 and he was 41.

Thanks for that date; it helps me approximate the time before I was in their lives. Everybody from those days is gone, now, so there isn't anyone to ask. I tried to "guestimate" so your noting that milestone helped; thanks again.

(Please excuse my posting these shots again, guys. I couldn't resist; those times were so happy, until April 23, 1955.)

One of the great things of working at a hobby shop is the great finds you come across. On Saturday I bought a new toy. It was made in the usa by Lionel. Set# 185W.

Its in great shape, and a great runner, not bad for 70+ years old.

Spot light car not pictured, as i need to repair it.

Mike,

Let me be the first to welcome you to MTJ!

Buddy, that is a great set and a nice find! Congratulations.

As I am partial (read knocked out) by Gunmetal, the 225 is particularly nice in GM. Bet it runs sweet too.

The stock car is my favorite 2600 series car too.

Rob

Ah, interesting that you posted a couple OGR URLs in your post.... thats a different way to go about it HUH?

Mike,

Beautiful set.And all of the boxes.I think I may be about four years older than that set and I have more holes in me than those boxes do.Someone really took care of that set.Again I must say beautiful :!:

Murph,

Your catalog also appears to be in exceptionally good condition for its age.

I have one from 1946 that is much worse in comparison.

Yes, Roger, it is in good shape, so I handle it w/ care. Somehow, it made it through my childhood - it must have been hidden under tons of things inaccessible to my distructive li'l mitts.

Here are two more facing-pages, 16 & 17...

(In fact, I have found more antique printed material among my father's papers, so I believe I wil start a thread offering it for what I hope will be the enjoyment of this forum, as well as an invitation for postings by my forum-mates here.)

Hot Dog Murph. Thanks for posting that last page. I've got 2 of those 262's one with chrome trim and one with copper. Actually I've got them into inventory as 262E. Gotta dig them out!

I'm really sorry the printing isn't clearer, but I try to post the images as close to the max of 253 KBs as possible. Perhaps, I should ask Robert to post the remaninig pages of this catalogue for me?

Hey Murph:
They aren't all that bad quality. Quit putting yourself down. They look great and I can read the fine print and I certainly don't have the best eyes!
