Lionel Brass? 2 Rail?

Postby E7 » Mon May 08, 2017 12:06 pm

I was snooping around on the OGR forum and ran across a Lionel topic on the York show forum.

http://ogrforum.ogaugerr.com/topic/lionel-booth?page=1

It appears that the Big L is doing a brass engine (or maybe a composite, or maybe both), and there is some two rail track in the one image. Some of the stuff in the pics looks pretty nice. Wondered what you guys over here on the 3 rail side knew of this, as I didn't have time to wade through the whole topic.

I've been looking too, brass boiler and die cast frame.

IF they came out with a "Must Have" engine maybe, but these days I'll settle for the old brass Williams/Samhongsa engines.

If you are referring to their new Hybrid brass offering, a Santa Fe Mike, it's a brass boiler and tender on a diecast 3 rail legacy chassis.

The order form list (3) 3 rail models. One brass and two painted variations. There is a video attached which they also posted on youtube. Nothing mentioned about a 2 rail option.

There is mention of a brass engine on the OGR board (see the link in my original post). Not sure if the person posting means the hybrid engines or not. As for the 2R thing, the track is HO, my mistake. The hybrid engines look pretty nice, particularly the Shay.

We've got a nomenclature problem. I don't know what Lionel calls the diecast models with brass detail parts. That's what the Shay is. John correctly pointed out the Santa Fe Mikado as the "hybrid". It's entire superstucture is brass.

The mike in the first pic above the shay is a diecast USRA catalog offering painted in a bunch of roads. Scrolling through the thread, I saw nothing of the hybrid brass ATSF model. Just the usual pissing and moaning about the sad state of York displays.

I think it's pretty safe to say the problem is with some of the OGR posters terminology.

As if terminology was their only problem on OGR,

Not sure what type of metal Lionel uses in their die cast parts, but is there any chance of corrosion issues between the two metals?

Bi-metallic corrosion of zinc diecastings rarely proves to be a problem. Many millions of castings are in service, which have inserts of brass, bronze and other nobler metals, and these have not shown any appreciable increase in the rate of corrosion of the zinc. In general therefore it is reasonable to assume that under mild or moderately severe atmospheric corrosion conditions some increase of corrosion can be expected but this is unlikely in many instances to affect the serviceability of the components. Under immersed conditions contact with copper and copper alloys should be avoided.

Thanks Chuck! Wasn't sure if Lionel used zinc or something else.

Just as I always suspected - one should not run one's trains under water :!:
