Weekend Photos - December 2021
Re: Weekend Photos - December 2021
Good point.
Re: Weekend Photos - December 2021
A wargamer/modeler mate sent me a few pics of some terrain hexes he recently finished. This one caught might eye for the excellent assembly, painting, and use of ground foam and tufts of tall grass. The water color is really nice as well:

For scale purposes, this is 1/285. The hex is about four inches across, the T-34 (GHQ) about an inch long. I need to get more info on his water methods. While many have moved on to acrylic paint, he's a holdout for enamels, Humbrol specifically. His process is exhaustive, but the results are brilliant.

Could be a good "how to",
Do not wait to strike till the iron is hot; but make it hot by striking.

A Lionel Corp (MTH) 254E drags a pair of refurbished Lionel 610 coaches around this year's Christmas tree:

The 612 observation seems to have developed a short that trips the circuit breaker on the postwar1034 pack I'm using, so we've temporarily dropped that from the local. A prewar Hafner semaphore stands alongside.

Agreed. I used the WS system with reasonably good results.
They offer a series of bottom paints combined with a ‘pour’ type resin. My water is more glass like however WS offers a ripples effect type resin that you apply over top of the water once it dries. I opted to leave well enough alone.

Peter sent this description of his water technique:
"I use green as my base water color as most rivers and many streams I see look green to me. For the color of the stream, I used a base coat of Behr Tannenbaum house paint. I brushed on the first coat and let it dry. The second coat was brushed on and then I stippled in with a brush to give a suggestion of ripples. For the real color, I used some old Polyscale German RLM Green colors. One is a bit lighter and more olive and the other is less olive and more dark. I spayed both on to give some subtle contrasts. The final step was to spray on some Polyscale Clear Gloss to give the water its sheen."
The reeds, which I thought were some variation of static grass:
"The tufts are by Vallejo and are the 4mm Light Green Wild Tufts. At this scale, they look like long grass or reeds. This is very easy to work with, just peel the tuft off the paper and stick to the surface of your terrain."

I like the over all color but to my eye it should be more glossy like water would be.

Those are just awesome!

As the excavations of the layout and the basement continue, more and more stuff unseen/unused for years is floating to the surface. I've been trying to make more room in the between-the-floor-joists shelving and found a few Williams boxcars my parents gave me some 25-30 years ago. I often wondered if this Lehigh Valley sports a prototypical paint scheme:

Very cool, regardless. I think these Williams boxcars are true 1/48, so they dwarf much of the Lionel PW gear they were intended to replicate.
So much stuff...

Yes I have always thought there are 2 scales in 3 rail O gauge. Actually 3 True 1:48, traditional size, and the smaller 027 size.

Well there you go!
Re: Weekend Photos - December 2021
That car is LV 97455, a rolling billboard.
Only one side was painted white with the map, that side also had the door removed and blanked over, so no longer in revenue service. No reporting marks or dimensions show, so no longer "legal" for interchange.
If it's of interest, of course.

The Williams box has maps and opening doors on both sides, so not quite right then.

Close enough for a TINPLATER eh.
