OMG! As a former resident of Conneaut I can remember in the late 50's and early 60's watch from up on the bluff the ore boats coming in and out of the harbor, the huletts working, and the endless strings of coal hoppers. It was cheap entertainment for a young lad, but fascinating! I love the laker model!

Always cool when a layout can incorporate an expansive dock scene, Sarge's Fletcher class and that O scaler in Chicago (sorry can't remember his name) with his huge ore dock scenario also come to mind.
Both links here though awesome stuff, thanks for posting.
Wow!
Thank God for You Tube (... unless of course you don't like it but I damn sure do these days.)

Pete,
You're probably thinking of Paul Balter. He had the model of the Fitzgerald in port, located right at the bottom of the stairs. It was the first thing you saw. I thought I had better pictures of the model, but this is all I could find at the moment.

BBJ, An awesome model of a tragic ship, forever remembered in Lightfoot's song. I like that rotary dumper at left in the second shot.
