Back to NWSL. I have 3 or 4 orders into them and two are fairly large (well, at least by my standards and checking account). Fingers crossed because I have no idea what, if anything will arrive. Hopefully a bunch.

I still hope someone picks up the line...yeah, I'm not the first to mention it.

I can outsource many of the items but some seem to be a little more difficult. As an example, the bronze thrust washers they offer. I'm sure there are other suppliers but, as of now, I haven't located them.

Hey Bob, maybe in your spare time you could start a database with alternate sources for all the cool things NWSL has offered over the years. You know, in your spare time :D

Jay,

I hope you get your stuff, but reading some of the posts here, seems like it might be iffy.

I just took a look at the NWSL website and copying ONLY the stuff related to "O" into something like WORD or maybe just plain printing it out might NOT be that bad. Then there is that spare time thing. LOL

Did you mean those tiny ferrules that go on either side of the worm gear? For onesies and twosies they can be made on a lathe. For a bunch, a screw machine would seem to be the answer.

I pulled up a sampling of the NWSL tutorials. All were in .pdf format.

Too much work - just print it directly to pdf form onto your desk top and save.
As the literacy rate declines, you’ll ask yourself why the quality of life continues to deteriorate in ways large and small, and in almost every instance the answer will be: because people stopped reading.

What good will that do if nobody picks up the product line?

It'll keep your spare time occupied and you'll have a record of what products were offered for those days of nostalgia when sitting in the rocker on the porch reminiscing about the good old days.

There is a section of Tutorials on the site, of course that will be of no use to you guys who know everything.

Save them for the future generation that will be wondering (well, maybe...) what NWSL was in the good old days.

I tend to download and save that kind of stuff whether I need it or not. When it comes to dealing with steam engines, I need all the help I can get. Every so often someone asks for some file that I've saved. Memory is cheaper than ever now. Just finished up my biannual file reconciliation and back ups off to 5 external drives and 1 internal. Takes 2 days, but better safe than facing that day when the hard drive dies.

Save the NWSL pdf.s so that when you're looking for gearboxes on ebay you can find the part numbers you need. Most ebay listings only give the part number and don't include the ratio or axle and drive shaft sizes.
You begin flying with a full bag of luck and an empty bag for experience. The object is to fill the bag of experience before you empty the bag of luck.

There are alternatives to quality gearing. Belt drives can be very smooth and quiet.

I agree about belt drives. All ears for a quality steam gearbox currently available.

Not really familiar with anything Bachmann makes for O Scale (HO & On30, yes). Would it be possible to share more info on what's available through them?

Jay
