Hello,

Welcome to 2 rail. I've painted my rails using spray cans also. I'd spray about a 6 foot section at a time and with a fingertip full of t-shirt dipped in mineral spirits I'd wipe the rail head before the paint really dried.

What about using chicken grit for ballast? When i tried this question on the NK form it got heated and deleted. Maybe if Tractor supply was a sponsor they would allow someone to mention chicken grit.

If you are happy with the appearance, that's all that matters. We'll just have to hope the chickens are OK with it!

They have a strong union. But, as long as you do not question their motives regarding the crossing of roads, they should be acquiescent to the use of their grit.

Painting track:
I use Tamiya colors for the track and when I spray while it is still wet grab a piece of rag wipe most of the paint off the top.
After, use as Scacey suggested a rubber abrasive there are lots of brands Peco, Roco, make them as well as what Scacey mentioned.
This is the paint I use the brush paint is for touching up the turnouts.

Here is some Purina Chicken Grit on a 1:10 scale model. I think it is probably too large for O scale. However, there is a smaller alternative called Chick Grit that is the same material but crushed finer than the Chicken Grit intended for adult poultry. I used the larger for this little diorama but I was going to look into the Chick Grit for O scale.

The grit is crushed granite. It is mostly a light gray in color, with a few pink pieces in the mix. I picked out the pink stones. I feel confident this could be dyed to a darker color to match specific ballast colors.

I have no idea if the pieces contain any ferrous bits that might stick to motor magnets. I know roofing granules sometimes have this issue.

I have a few bags of the first stage grit. With some some dyes for concrete i can change the colors. I'm going to try a test with it.
I can tell you first hand don't cross the chicken union. during one of my 4th of July picnics a friend placed four of my chickes in his brothers new f250. Not such a harmless joke. 2 hours into the picnic the one brother says. "Yo redneck boy where is your gun rack. I see you have four hillbilly girls in there." The only fabric not ruined was the seat belts.

My new year's resolution seems to be working. I lost some weight. A third of the rails. The outer line is almost done. I pushed the rail so close to the edge i may need a net above the floor.
I need to find a place for the rest of the mess

Speaking of nets, the raccoons got in the train room last night. Only casualty was my SP NW-2 of All Nation fame, which took a five foot dive to the concrete. It hit cab first, the lip above the rear windows, and buckled the entire body!

Committed to salvaging the misc. stuff and dropping the rest in the trash, I first set it in a cradle and strategically whacked the thing with a steel mallet. It took two strikes, and - straight! The cab lip cracked when I straightened it, so JB Weld to the rescue.
