Facebook is in the business of selling user data to others. Either in the form of providing targeting for ads, or directly. In the Facebook ecosystem, others are in on the action, too. If you like a post, or take a quiz, or share a meme, at the very least you are providing data to the originator of the post. How they use that information or what they do next...who knows? (google "like farming"). Of course, Facebook is not alone in their business model.

Remember, if the service is "free", you are the product

And facebook and they rest of the social media have suckered people into believing what is being posted. Just my opinion of course.

It's not so much Facebook and the rest of the social media sites as much as the people that make use of them to sucker everyone.

I disagree, I think Facebook et al have both a moral and ethical duty to police their own store. It's no different to me than the folks who knowingly allow illegal activity to occur on their business premises. If you knowingly allow it, you are complicit, period.

I wonder just how many of the minions out there understand the dangers and still do it. I've told my older sister to get off it and she won't. All the people in her neighborhood (out in the country) report to each other if a strange car or anything suspicious is seen and she thinks it's great. But, I just had a phishing email sent to me using her address, so she's been compromised.

I'm sorry and I'm not trying to be mean, but anyone who uses facebook, twitter or any of the social media outlets deserves what they get. Just plain stupid.

How many people here are on "Linked-In", the business media for professionals? Seems like it isn't too hard to post your information with them and I just can't imagine it's much safer than facebook or the others. Comments.

Not necessarily true. Anywhere that one's e-mail address exists and is visible makes it available to use basically pasted over the true origin. I get ones every so often that give every appearance that I sent them to myself! There's no record of my sending any such e-mail - addresses get harvested off wherever they are available in plain site on the web site - my old work address is plainly visible and gets used.

I am but I rarely make any use of it.....and probably should update that since it does have some value to me (in theory) along with one of the others of that ilk. As for safety, very little is "safe" and I'm not sure anything is truly 100% safe. For example, consider this forum.....

Recently, I received an alleged "invitation" from the site. It purported to be from my wife's supervisor. Not only did I have no interest in "linking up" at such a place, nor with her, I was suspicious that the woman would send me such an invitation. It seemed more likely to me that Linked-In itself sent the invitation. I deleted.

Every once in a while, I get alleged invitations to join the group, but since they purport to have come from friends with whom I already communicate, often, via phone, in-person, and e-mail, I figured it was Linked-In trying something shady. I have no idea and do not care. I continue to stay far away.

Mostly, I do not see the attraction with such copious personal sharing on such a site. Maybe that's my loss, according to some, but I get enough dubious "communication" within the couple model train sites I attend presently.
